Is there someone who's not into LEGO Star Wars?

I personally can't find mysefl interested in collecting LEGO Star Wars but at the same time I almost feel like an outcast because of that. I've never been a fan of Star Wars franchise. I don't even know most of the LEGO Star Wars sets. (although Darth Vader minifig is pretty cool)
How many of you don't have any SW set in your collection?
Is everybody who collects SW sets devoted to Star Wars?

Man, I wish I could not be interested in Lego Star Wars sets! It would save me a lot of money. But I do, so I really can't answer your questions. I must say, though, that Star Wars helped keep me interested in Lego as a pre-teen, an age when usually many children move on to more "grown-up" stuff. And even when Star Wars sets seemed to get blase in the design department back in 2001, BIONICLE made a timely arrival to hook me back firmly into Lego. Now, 10 years later, I feel that same apathy towards Star Wars starting to set in again. That probably can be better explained elsewhere; don't want to derail your thread.

You should start that thread - I'd be fascinated to find out more.

Almost every store selling LEGO sets has a special Star Wars 'chamber'. LEGO catalogs have usually lots of dedicated pages, only to Star Wars.
I've never had any SW set. I like Town/City, anything that is realistic - Pirates, Castle, Creator, and only some unrealistich themes - space [not all].
That was one of the reasons I lost interest in Lego around 1999, because City sets became ridiculously simplified and most of the "ordinary" themes was dropped.

I'm not particularly a fan of the Star Wars sets, and having got back into Lego recently, I feel that although the Star Wars universe is gigantic, there seem to be a lot of 're-works' and re-releases. How many Millennium Falcons have there been now? (All sizes included - 6). If I was a hardcore collector of Lego sets, I would be a little annoyed if TLG kept on releasing what is essentially the same spaceship.

Saying that, I have picked up a few of my favourite characters' minifigs, as I can appreciate a good translation of character to minifig form!

^ Re-releases are hardly specific to just Star Wars though, how many police stations and fire stations have there been? The LEGO licence tie-ins have always been a massive draw for me, and Star Wars is the biggest licence going...
  • gimegime Member Posts: 21
Most police stations and fire trucks are not re-releases but complete redesigns and updates to a new style.
(I'm not saying I'm against the SW re-releases;))

I was into collecting Star Wars sets when they originally came out, but that was all. All the new Clone Wars stuff doesn't interest me in the least. I'm currently selling off my entire Star Wars collection because I'm using that $$ to purchase City, Trains, Town, etc.
  • mackrelmackrel Member Posts: 75
And most importantly the price. For example the Space Shuttle ($99.99) GREAT SET! Everyone should have it in there collection. But how much would it cost if Darth Vader was the pilot...$179.99????? I love Star Wars but I don't buy that many sets anymore.

I've got nothing against the Star Wars theme, but, like 'gime', I am much more interested in the 'realistic' sets.

I'm totally not into the Star Wars sets. I liked the original, and the SW sets nowadays do have good pieces, but it's just not my type of LEGO theme.
  • Si_UKNZSi_UKNZ Member Posts: 4,179
Never liked the Star wars sets, except for the Ewok minifigs and the Yoda minifigs. To me spaceships should be smooth and just look rubbish in Lego.
Generally, it just seems weird to want to act out a film, seems to limit the imagination somewhat.

When I was 10 or so I thought a Lego X-Wing would be the greatest set.

Now that it exists, and I have the money to buy it, it's a bit anti-climactic. I own a few Star Wars sets (no X-Wing), not a lot, and I don't feel the need to purchase many more. I get a lot more out of non-licensed space-y themes like Space Police 3, Atlantis and the upcoming Alien Conquest. For the money, Star Wars sets provide very little amusement.

Some of the figures are neat - the droids are definitely fun, but I'm more likely to part out Star Wars sets than any other theme.

I'm sure there are Plenty of AFOL's who don't care for Star Wars. There are even some like myself who collect space and still don't care for Star Wars.

This perfectly sums up my frustration with the Lego Star Wars line. As an enthusiast, I'm not particularly excited to see rehashed vehicles. As a collector, it's even more frustrating to know that I'm resigned to buy them anyway or give up any hope of maintaining a complete collection.

I also dislike (and realize I might be the only one) how focused TLG is on minifigures recently -- offering an "exclusive" one in nearly every set. I realize TLG is in the business of designing sets to maximize revenue, but it all seems too calculated and contrived to me.

Having said all this, I do think Lego is in a sort of renaissance with respect to the great designs across themes they have been putting out in the past few years.

I have never been into collecting SW. However, I do realize the importance of SW in the legacy of LEGO. If it were not for SW, LEGO would be a much different toy nowadays (think Playmobil). SW, for all the pomp and circumstance, did wonders for us AFOLs that do not collect SW.

The amount of money generated by the SW theme is astronomical and helped TLG to rebuild it's empire (now #4 in Toy Sales, correct Huw?). With that it was able to reinvigorate excitement in its other brands and themes while attracting new lines (PoP, Indiana Jones, Toy Story, etc.).

Along with all of the new SW sets and the themes that followed, TLG was able to create new parts that are helping to redesign old LEGO themes as well as create new ones.

Again, I am not a collector of SW LEGO, but I am thankful to those that are. If not for them, the landscape of LEGO would be drastically different.

To be honest, if it wasn't for the Star Wars licence, there might not even BE a LEGO company any more.....

Very true, off-topic but interesting: a quick synopsis of the economic difficulties from wikipedia. The Legoland amusement parks were hemorrhaging money before being sold:

"In 2003, The LEGO Group faced a budget deficit of 1.4 billion DKK (220 million USD at then current exchange rates), causing president Poul Plougmann to be fired and Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen to take over. In the following year, almost one thousand employees were laid off, due to budget cuts.

However, in October, 2004, as The LEGO Group faced an even larger deficit, Kristiansen also stepped down as president, while placing 800,000 DKK of his private funds in the company.

In 2005, The LEGO Group reported a 2004 net loss of DKK 1,931 million on a total turnover, including LEGOLAND amusement parks, of DKK 7,934 million."

I like Star Wars a lot but I don't rush out to get every remade set every time one is released. They are some of the best Minifigs ever IMO. I have zero interest in Clone Wars.

I love the Star Wars universe, and I'm a very big geek when it comes to anything involving Star Wars, including the LEGO Star Wars line. However, I am NOT some mindless a fan of the theme: I intensely dislike most of the Clone Wars sets, as they are generally over-priced and too cartoony. Also, I'm more interested in the technological, political, military, and economic aspects of the Star Wars universe than I am with the epic struggle between the Jedi and the Sith. I have hardly any Jedi: the pride and joy of my 20 something SW sets is my Star Destroyer, my Fighter Tank, X-Wing, TIE Interceptor, and my A-wing. Also, a sthe years go by, I find myself gravitating more towards MOCing than collecting; I just can't afford to get the latest Star Wars sets anymore. That doesn't mean I'm abandoning Star Wars; I'm just taking a break, so to speak. So as you can see, while I love Star Wars, I'm far from your average Jedi-obssessed, Star Wars-convention type of guy.

I'm not a fan of Star Wars so I can't justify spending the extra money George Lucas charges for rights. I only buy SW sets for specific parts or the battle packs because they are cheap. Fleshies bug me though, I want to replace all their heads.

I'm a City guy, and I hate Star Wars. There is too many sets to collect and they are over priced. I mean who will pay $500 for the Millennium Falcon?

    Well clearly someone will....

Used 10179 UCS MF sets are going for over $1000 right now, and MISB for $200-300 more than that. It's getting ridiculous, to be honest. Even 2-3 years ago when I was completing my SW collection it wasn't anything like as bad as this. I'm genuinely not sure I'd collect SW if I had to start from scratch now......

I have a few original trilogy sets, but anything beyond that I have no interest in. And actually, I only bought those because there was a lull in other Lego coming out. I would much rather have a City or Adventure set.
  • wagnerml2wagnerml2 Member Posts: 1,376
I collected classic space, castle and pirates as a kid, but the Star Wars sets are what drew me out of my dark ages in 1999. I have purchased many of the sets and built a few. My son collects and builds the sets. Now that I am an adult, I have a finished room in the basement with a 16' x 16' train layout and town. I have found that buying, keeping and selling the star wars sets is a nice way to stretch a dollar and cut the cost of other sets and bricks that I need for my layout. Also, one can never deny what DrDaveWatford pointed out about the licensed themes helping lego to grow into the success story it is today.

I buy sets that I like and don't necessarily collect all the sets within particular themes. There are some themes I like better than others. So when it comes to SW, there are certain sets that I will purchase ( like the battle packs, Hoth sets in general, small spaceships ) but don't make it a major part of my collection as a whole. I collect SW but am not devoted to it.

I really like Lego Star Wars (been collecting it since 1999) and it is my second favourite theme (after Space). However I have no real interest in the Clone Wars stuff at all. It is way to overpriced (I've bought a few sets for my younger brother who adores CW and watches the show) and the cartoonish faces just don't seem "Lego-ish" to me. I only take an interest in sets from either of the Trilogy's with a bias towards those of the Original Series.

I also really miss the cheap Star Wars "pocket money" sets of about 2 to 8 pounds sterling though... They were a nice way of picking up decent figs without having to cough up a shed load of money. Then of course is the fact that every set seems to have an Exclusive miniature figure. It seems that the only CW ones that aren't exclusive are Anakin, Asohka, some of the jedi, droids and clones. Every other one only seems to be available in one or two sets. Even main characters are limited to one set, like Asajj Ventress (which my little brother bugs me about wanting) who is only just getting a second release wheras Anakin appears in a multitude of sets.

Same, i don't really care for the star wars sets. I much prefer the cities or somthing else.
  • stagusstagus Member Posts: 256
City is my main theme but I do like the Star Wars sets.....original trilogy mainly. They are a different type of build to city and I find them fun. I also can remember being awestruck with the original movie in the '70's!!!

Probably quite a good investment too if you look at what the 'big' Falcon is going for!

    Not a clone wars fan.

I'm not a fan of the clone wars, but I will get my hands on some exceptional figs in that series (ARF trooper, Mandalorians).
  • snailladsnaillad Member Posts: 4
Last SW set I bought was the death star as it was good price for piece ratio and I got all the figs I wanted, since then none of the normal sw sets have captured my interest and prices have put me off! or I dislike clone wars sets so have never been tempted to buy them. I'm now into Modular houses and have sold off an unopened millenium falcon to pay for the next one :)

I found this topic very intriguing because I thought probably I'm a very few of those who are not into SW. Although I do have two SW sets from last year, they're the smallest ones. I've also got to have some interesting new pieces.

I think that SW sets would be great in ways that: 1) there are quite a few rare & interesting pieces to add to your collection; 2) having that said, such pieces could inspire pretty cool and different building techniques; and 3) how can you NOT ignore the minifigs?? :-)

Well, it sounds like I'm a huge fan of SW sets, but my interest is mostly in CITY/TOWN, buildings & houses. I'm thinking of getting the Death Star some day-hopefully soon!-but that means I'd better save money for that.

I think Lego focuses too much on SW. But it is highly profitable so one can't blame them.

Personally I have never owned and can't see myself ever owning one. Creator and City FTW.

I'm a Star Wars fan and a LEGO fan, but I don't collect Lego Star Wars. Wierd?
Somehow I don't like the sets, I have only 2 I think. And they are expensive, thanks to the license.
One day I would buy the Death Star...

Actually you got someone here who does not personally own a Starwars lego set I am very much into collecting (it means playing but for older folks) lego castle sets. I am an avid starwars fan (read all the books up to present day) maybe thats why I do not own any sets. There are quite a few ideas from the books that would make great lego sets. My son however is into legos and likes starwars so he owns a few sets.

i can say hand on heart that the star wars sets do nothing for me i have seen loads of them in the shops and i have picked them up had a look at them but nope i perfer many more sets

i mainly collect movie sets and i know star wars is a movie but i just think the sets from hp or potc ect are just so much better
  • SarahIsabellaSarahIsabella Member Posts: 69
Nope, I'm not interested in the Star Wars sets either (although I must admit the Death Star looks amazing!)
I was disappointed that so many of the BrickMaster sets were Star Wars. I'm hoping that one of the remaining ones will be POTC.

I've been collecting the SW sets since 1999, but the Clone Wars stuff is doing more to put me off buying than anything I could have imagined. Normally I'd be annoyed by all the new CW sets, but with the UCS SSD on the horizon, that's more money set aside for the big fella.

There have been exceptions, however. I bought the T-6 Jedi Shuttle strictly for the Saesee Tiin and Shaak Ti minifigs, and then only because I MOC'd Saesee's Jedi Starfighter and couldn't stand not to have him in it.

I like making money off of old Star Wars sets.. nothing more.. and that is going away due to higher and higher prices for a set that does not really reflect those costs (unless on sale) Are they neat? Sure. Have they helped Lego stay in business? Certainly. Have they helped in developing new parts and building techniques? No Doubt. But I made a choice back when I left my 'Dark ages' to only collect one to two lines... Town/City/train collector (with a smattering of Castle.. occasionally pirate) which is plenty expensive enough, believe me.

I'm a huge Star Wars fanboy but never really been into Lego star wars. Don't really know why but I've always loved Castle, Pirates, and Western, I do have a few Star Wars key ring Figs but thats it. The dark ages for me in Lego was when they tried to morph into playmoble and castle Legos looked nothing like Legos should, i think this is about when Lego almost went under for a second time 2004-5ish?

I collect the Star Wars sets but more so for nostalgia (as a child, I wrote to Lego suggesting a Star Wars line as well as several others). My enjoyment of the Star Wars films has greatly diminished in the last decade though with three horrible prequels and that god-awful cartoon. Then of course there's all of the EU garbage like those dreadful, dreadful novels. Combine that with the fanbois who demonstrate their complete lack of taste by drooling over the worst aspects of the films (Boba Fett, Darth Maul, lightsabers, Jedi, CGI) and it's hard to have any enthusiasm for what has has become a real mess. What I once listed as my favorite franchise of all time doesn't even make my top five anymore thanks to all of that. Still, thanks to the nostalgia of a time when only half of the Star Wars universe (ie, the Saturday morning cartoons, the Ewok TV movies and the craptastic holiday special) sucked instead of 95% of it, I make a point of collecting the Star Wars Lego line, though only things directly relating to the six live-action films.

Perhaps I am in the minority here, but I think the Clone Wars tv show has been really well done. All i want to do after watching an episode, is grab the Republic Gunship and start playing like I was 10 again. As I recall, the corresponding cartoons (and comics) were the real fuel for my playing back then, be it GIJoe, Tformers, GoBots, HeMan, Mask, etc. I imagine its likely the same for kids and Star Wars these days. Throw in some Tim Zahn OT novels and I'm a kid all over again!
