This stems from a 2004 decision by Lego to update/change it's color pallet. The change was for a number of reasons and was a highly controversial and contentious issue. Many colors were a eliminated or updated. The colors most effect were brown, light and dark gray.
The name bluish gray comes from the fact the new colors have a bluish tint when compared to the old colors. If you were to buy a pre-2004 dark gray brick you would know right away. Its very brownish when compared to the current bricks. Pre-2004 colors are plain light gray, dark gray and brown.
