Not an idea but possibly the best place to mention it - I saw on facebook that Ideas is pushing for more "original" submissions. I checked the blog on the website and it said "Many of your submissions are based on classic movies and TV series. We want to see more original creations such as the Exo-SuitBirds and the soon-to-be-launched Maze; product ideas that start from scratch and that aren’t based on existing properties". I wonder if this is trying to push Ideas away from IP's or just making it clearer what they've wanted all along.

^I would like to see more original submissions for sure. Sadly non-IP ideas tend to be either really lousy or 10,000 piece megaMOCs. Seems like ever since the Western Modular that the AFoL community all rallied around was rejected the community lost its enthusiasm for throwing their collective weight behind other original projects.

Hi, I hope everyone has had a nice Christmas.

I have submitted my Lego Ideas project, and was hoping to gather some support and/or comments on the project.
So for those that may not have heard of the TV Show 'Red Dwarf', I'll give some background.
Red Dwarf is a British Sci-Fi Comedy series that started in 1988 and is still going, originally a BBC production, it was revived in 2008 by the digital TV channel Dave. Recently Dave announced that 2 new series had been commissioned and would air in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

“This is an S.O.S distress call from the mining ship Red Dwarf. The crew are dead, killed by a radiation leak.

The only survivors are Dave Lister, who was in suspended-animation during the disaster, and his pregnant cat who was safely sealed in the hold. Revived 3 million years later, Lister's only companions are, a life form who evolved from his cat and Arnold Rimmer, a hologram simulation of one of the dead crew.

I am Holly, the ships computer with an IQ of 6,000 - the same IQ of 6,000 P.E. teachers.”   - Holly (A.I. Red Dwarf)

My project features the main ship 'JMC mining ship Red Dwarf', 4 minifigures based on the 4 main characters and 2 scutters. I've designed this project to not only appeal to fans of the show, but also to every Lego fan young and old. Since Red Dwarf is set 3 million years into the future, the ship and its crew would quite feasibly fit in perfectly with any of the official Lego space themes or to some extent Star Wars.

I have created this project using the Lego Digital Design software, so at the moment all the pictures have been captured using that, but I have ordered the parts and will upload the photos as soon as I can.

If you like my idea please give it support here.

    many thanks

    Pauleo

I don't think they've wanted non IP ideas all along, from the fact that they have approved IP ones. If they didn't want them they could have rejected them.

They have probably been given enough ideas about what IPs people do want now, so may well cut out the middle man.

I think they want ideas in general. They're not going to turn down an idea just because it's not the most original idea that fans could possibly come up with, particularly if they see a lot of market potential in it. Licensed projects do often have more strings attached, though.

But I think the bigger reason for this new push for non-licensd ideas is that users don't seem to need any extra encouragement to come up with licensed project ideas, whereas non-licensed projects make it to review a lot more rarely, and many of those that have haven't been viable for one reason or another. By trying to encourage more non-licensed Ideas projects they increase their chances of getting a non-licensed "hit".

look at lego's latest original idea, Nexo knights, that's something that would have 0 chances of getting even close to gather enough support on Ideas.
One problem is who is voting? maybe Ideas is now perceived as nothing more than a way to get nice displays of your favourite licenses and other users who want something else mostly stopped caring?

Having more non-licensed projects may lead to a decrease in their chances -it seems not to be the lack of ideas, but the lack of votes that is the problem. More unlicensed projects will probably lead to less votes on average. It's voting behaviour / rules that they may need to change.

If someone has a great unlicensed idea, are they currently not going to submit it but would do if Lego say they want more unlicensed projects? I doubt it. They would have submitted it anyway.

IP or no IP, getting more than a few dozen votes on any Ideas project is a major feat. Social media is what TLG recommends to get people supporting it, but Twitter, FaceBook, Tumblr, etc, aren't really that useful unless you can manage to get it to go viral & then you need to hope those who see it get how it works & actually vote (I've had to explain to a number of potential supporters that Lego Ideas isn't a crowdfunding thing).

If I could convert the retweets & likes into votes, I'd be well over 1,000-1,500 supporters right now, but my project currently has just over 300. Considering almost no Lego or MARVEL websites/fansites have said anything about my project, 325 supporters is a major accomplishment. That lack of engagement with groups/fansites is not for a lack of trying, most haven't responded to a single email or message (the worst are the ones that have Lego Ideas projects plastered throughout their site & respond that they don't get involved with Lego Ideas stuff).

TLG could do a few things to help get more people supporting projects, IP or no IP.
    1) They need to educate the general public about what Ideas is & how it works. There are a number of people out there that hear of stuff like this & what is their first thought these days, "Oh, so it's like Kickstarter. Thanks, but no thanks, I want to know how much it's going to cost me first."
    2) They could add a true sign-up/sign-in with FaceBook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc. They recently added buttons to 'log in using ...', but it just redirects to the standard sign-up process. A few potential supporters when this route (probably seeing it as a quicker way to sign-up) & discovered that it's same as the standard sign-up, so they back out & no extra votes for your project.

As for my project, I recently wrote a Tumblr post about it, for those wanting more background on it:

I only begin reading the description and this : "I myself have been building this for 2 hours of hard work and think hard." already raises the question : how old are you?
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
    ^ I assume a non-native English speaker.

Although mentioning the two hours of hard work doesn't really help to sell it.

Another art project.  I know the art ones don't do well but it does have a better chance through the review process considering the amount of pieces: 590.

It's just monochromes on a display. And good luck getting them to do nude figures. Those yellow hips haven't been available for ages.
  • Vindic8edVindic8ed Member Posts: 206
It's meant to be simple, not everything in life needs to be complex.  ;)  Aside from that, I've already stated before that the chances of anything I create actually becoming a set are next to zero but I enjoy doing it.
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
There is already quite a number of people that collect monochromes. Part of the fun is the chase for new parts. A set like that would ruin the fun!
  • Vindic8edVindic8ed Member Posts: 206
    edited January 2016
I didn't know that was part of the fun, but it makes sense.  One reason I had the idea was to fulfill the demand for a monochrome set considering the popularity I've seen around it.

The ZeroHouse has been approved now as a side note.

Supported! This would be a really repetitive build but also a really fun play experience that is different than what you get in a typical LEGO set. I said it would probably cost $50 to $100. The piece count is high but the amount of repetition would probably bring the price down considerably, especially since Technic cross axles are very cheap to produce.

Thanks for your support! Regarding the cost, that was pretty much my thinking too. With a few minor alterations, the Sphere's total part count could be dropped to 800-900 pieces, with only 7 or 8 different pieces used in the entire build. It was certainly my hope that this would help keep the final price down.

Cool concept & a little bit twisted, a Lego Idea project that shows, if a little bit simplified (let's face it, Lego Ideas sets aren't meant to be Creator Expert sets), how Lego sets come about. If I may be so bold, I feel this set needs it's own little Inception moment, two or three printed tiles designed to look like the Lego Ideas set box...

We are planning to get our Lego Tumblr blog back up & running this week, I was planning to do an article on a few Lego Ideas projects we have particularly liked as the first article, would you mind if your project was mentioned in the article?

Is this the Lego equivalent of "we know you like to drive, so we put a car in your car, so you can drive while you drive." ?

@VorpalRyu The blog post sound great, you can send me a PM here if you have more questions about the idea. ;)

The building is simplified, because the outside isn't 100% minifig scale, it's smaller and I didn't want to make too big model (it has 1000+ pieces now :P ). But the interior was more important for me :)

I think it's a brilliant idea. Our son is going to get a kick out of this. (I've already decided that this will make 10,000 and get through review lol... Because Our city needs somewhere for the Lego minifigs to work...) I'll share the hell out of this on twitter Facebook and Pintrest too. I'm doing so for a few other projects. @KovJonas it's an awesome project, the comment was more a dig those who would gone the thirty thousand brick path creating a project like this. Scaling the exteriors, while keeping the interiors minifigure scale like you have is a very creative solution.

Bravo, not only is this an original concept it's an idea that has been explored several times by LEGO and many others however you've taken it to the next level of awesomeness, detail and originality to make this a worthy project and concept of being on the market. The use of Technic bricks, beams and CBS elements really make this an outstanding innovation of parts usage much like the highly skilled designers of LEGO do for the larger sets. It breaks up the traditional 'Modular Building' style and gives is a breath of fresh air without clashing too much with the existing sub-theme; visually can stand on its own as well in its proposed context.

Is it okay that this is still a work in progress? I'm still figuring out how, exactly, I want to do the arms (in addition to finishing the back, and adjusting colours), but it's already turning out so well (in my opinion, at least) that I'm too excited not to share it, yet.

It's Sealion (and Black Waltz #1) from Final Fantasy IX.

This is my first time making a custom set (aside from the fiddling around with random pieces that everyone with Lego does), and I probably won't be submitting this specific model to Ideas. It's mostly just practice before I try something more complicated like the Prima Vista airship. As such, any feedback and advice is hugely appreciated.

Hello everyone! I'm going to share my first Lego Ideas submission with you.

The set is based on the classic animated series 'Ducktales'. In 2017 Disney is going to relaunch the series and this would be the perfect time for a Lego Ducktales set!

The project has been up for a little more than two days now and is gathering support nicely. I hope that, if you like it, I can count on you to help me realise this becoming an official set! If you do like it, please share it as much as you want!

And if you have any tips or improvements, please let me know!
