The Brickset Builders Guild - share your MOCs here!

edited July 2014 in Building and Techniques
Although Brickset is primarily a website concerning collecting, there are plenty of talented builders on the Brickset forum, who often post MOCs on the 'what are you building right now' thread. Therefore, after consulting with Huw, he and the other moderators have kindly allowed me to set up a new thread solely for presenting your MOCs.

So without further ado, I would like to introduce 'The Brickset Builders Guild.'

There are no limitations on what you can post, including models of any theme or size, in real bricks or in LDD. As long as it is all your own creation, just about anything goes!

As well as simply demonstrating your building skills, a weekly contest will also be held. There are a few details I should give about how I envisage these contests running, although there is every chance that this will change with time as we discover what works and what does not. Anyway, this is how (at least) the first contest will work:

The contest each week will run from one Wednesday to the next, starting and ending at 00:00 GMT.
Naturally, if you miss the deadline for one week, your MOC will be entered for the next week.
All of the MOCs posted each week will be eligible for judging.
In each week, the models will be judged by two judges.
Each of these judges will be nominated by the judges of the previous week.
The judging will not be based on size or theme, only skills and building techniques demonstrated will be taken into account.

There is no prize for this weekly contest beyond the acknowledgement and glory of being Brickset's builder of the week! However, there may be larger contests held which will have prizes every so often.

The judges for this week will be posted later.

I look forward to seeing plenty of outstanding MOCs!

Yes, with this thread, Bricksetters can now show their creativity (and being good friends with @CapnRex101, I knew about this thread before it was posted. There's a detail we've been working on together but I think I'll keep it secret until CapnRex wants to reveal it ;-) ). Therefore I shall get the ball of creativity rolling and post up pics of an LDD creation of mine I've had on my computer for a while but never got round to showcasing it. Here's my Architecture-style dream mansion:

This is great! I'm in the same boat as @GothamConstructionCo though :-S

Would you consider using the 'Brickset Builders Guild' as a means for encouraging people to work together on collaborative projects for shows?
  • adventure_aladventure_al Member Posts: 243
I'm not exactly super proud of this or anything. It's far from a master piece but here is my first MOC in OVER 10 YEARS! So I'm pleased I manage to stick something together. Admitadly struggling with a roof. I guess we all have to start somewhere, right?

@LostInTranslation‌ - Absolutely, whatever use people have for it is welcome, as long as it is MOC related.

Will there be guidelines or a theme for the contest? Or are you simply going to judge what has already been posted to this thread?
  • CapnRex101CapnRex101 Administrator Posts: 2,364
@binaryeye - The intention is to simply judge from what is posted, but this may develop depending on how it works out on this occasion.
  • oldtodd33oldtodd33 Member Posts: 2,728
@CapnRex101 Will LDD files be judged along with actual brick built MOC's or just real life MOC's?
  • CapnRex101CapnRex101 Administrator Posts: 2,364
@oldtodd33‌ - LDD and real brick creations will be judged equally.

I didn't count as I built it so I can only estimate - around 6,500.

Some very high quality MOC's here I must admit!

Well, here's another MOC I've been motivated to actually finish - a 96x96, 9,000 piece LEGO mosaic of the cover art of my absolute favourite album of recent years - The Resistance by Muse (opinions may vary of course)

Oh, and here's the mosaic (it is best viewed at a distance, or really small :-) ):
    image
And another angle so you can see the studs:
    image

This will hopefully be the first of a series of "LEGO album covers" that I hope to do... eventually :-)

It's also only the second mosaic I've ever done, and the first at this size :-)

^Nice. I always hated that minifig-scale vehicles could only ever fit one or two figs (even big vehicles). Just out of interest, though, is there no translucent rear windscreen-type piece that would fit?
  • TheOneVeyronianTheOneVeyronian Member Posts: 1,372
@plasmodium I've tried several pieces for the rear tailgate and I couldn't find anything that worked, mainly due to the awkward dimensions that the vehicle is built in. I admit that I'm not exactly happy with the top part of the tailgate as it is (it also breaks a lot!), which I'll probably experiment with more once I get some more time :-)

  • TheOneVeyronianTheOneVeyronian Member Posts: 1,372
Actually, following @plasmodium's question which he asked "out of interest", it actually inspired me to further mod my 7-seater SUV (again). There is now a rear windscreen, not as simple as it could have been as it turned out as it involved a roof redesign for it to maintain functionality:
    Closed tailgate
LEGO Minifigure scale Car - 7-wide SUV - seats 7 minifigs - MODded tailgate 1
    Opened tailgate
LEGO Minifigure scale Car - 7-wide SUV - seats 7 minifigs - MODded tailgate 2

(I think Count Dooku's gaudy red wheels are permanent :-P )

As the end of another week closes upon us it's time to announce this weeks winner.

It's turned out to be a vehicle themed week this week and some very strong offerings from a elite pool of talented builders. Both @Pittfall69 and I enjoyed pouring over the fantastic MOCs. So in a way your all winners. But in another way there can only be one winner.

This week the prestigious award of the Brickset Builders Guild contest ,

    image

Goes to @TechnicNick for his wonderful USC scale Morris Minor.
By no means an easy feat of brick and stud engineering as the Morris Minor is one of the most curviest cars ever put into production. But somehow @TechnicNick has captured the essence if the car and as a set it wouldn't look out of place on the shelves of a Lego Brand retail Store.

As we are now entering a third week of showing off our building skills, I hand over the rains of judging to @TechnicNick who I think is more than qualified for the task.
Co-judge is yet to be announced due to a unexpected hospital visit today.

Thank you everyone and keep your ideas and talent coming.

Now that a week has passed, it is time to announce the winner of this week's contest, and that person is...

@TechnicNick‌ for his Morris Minor! The details of his 1:7 Scale model were fantastic. He certainly has a gift building Lego Scale Models.

The only prize for victory is of course the recognition, but this badge will also be posted on your wall:

Congratulations to @TechnicNick‌ and good luck to next week's entries.
