Minifigs for a nativity scene?

DuchessaDuchessa Member Posts: 287
edited August 2011 in Everything else LEGO
Hi all! This fall I'm planning a new project: building a nativity scene in Lego. I want it to be completed before December, which means that I've already started ordering pieces from BL. I have camels, cows, goats and other animals coming in from all over the world :) I also have lots of bricks and ideas for the stable. But I'm having problems with the minifigs. I think that this is exactly the right place to ask for some help.

I want (of course) Joseph, Mary and little baby Jesus. Besides them, I'm also looking for suitable minifigs to represent the three wise men, along with some shepherds. The only minifig I'm totally sure about it one of the wise men. I'm going to use Sheik Amar from the Prince of Persia-series: http://www.1000steine.com/brickset/minifigs/large/pop009.jpg
I'm also thinking about using this one for baby Jesus, with another head:

But for the other ones? All suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I'm also planning a Nativity, and have a load of notes written up. I'll post some of them later, but for now, I'd recommend the S1 Caveman hair for Joseph. I think it would be wise to do it in yellow, not the flesh. I would assume that you didn't realise that you can't change the head on microfigs.

Ah.. I didn't know that the microfig heads can't be changed. Thanks for the info! I might have to reconsider who gets to play the role of baby Jesus... :)

I'd suggest some Star Wars Jedi torsos and capes (like Qui-Gon) for shepherds.

I love this idea. The MMV and Mill raid sets have nice peasanty/shepherd people.
I'm going with a winter villiage this year, using the sets and perhaps a bit of creativity, but this is one for the future. I look forward to seeing your pics.
Before chistmas though, I have to make a halloween diorama :)

If only the trophies of the CMS had faces...it would make a nice baby. The are unfortunately off-colored as well.

The Hassansins (did I get the spelling right) of PoP would have nice headpieces. I'd also agree with the Jedi torsos. I don't know which other minifigs use Jedi hoods (so it doesn't have to come in brown) which I think would be nice for Mary (she has to have a female face to be more appropriate). :-)

Old Obi-Wan Kenobi would be a good one for one of the wise men but a yellow headed one

The SW jedi torsos seems like a good suggestions! I have lots of them at home, so I'll take them out and try to imagine them as shepheards.

I'll also check my MMV for minifigs (I don't have the Mill Raid yet) and other items, along with the other PoP-set minifigs.

I'm thinking that the white headpiece for this guy would be great for Mary:

If you're not set on a microfig for baby Jesus, then I would recomend putting a whatever standard minifig head you want to use for him on top of a white minifig head. It really looks like a baby in "swaddling clothes."

Another option might be to put the baby head in a upsidedown turban. Unfortunately it only sits in it and doesn't connect. (Credit to SlyOwl for that idea)

Interesting ideas about the baby Jesus! I'll try them at home and see what I like :)

Another idea right now for the wise men is to find three guys with turbans. I already have Sheik Amar (tan). Maybe a nice friend would be the purple version of Dumbledore, without the beard and with a purple turban?

It's not great, but I did one last Christmas using a mixture of Star Wars and Harry Potter torsos for the Magi and some castle stuff for Mary and Joseph. I'll probably try update it for this year... but it's only August! :P

You should add Jar Jar Binks, Batman and a monkey. Everything looks better with a monkey.

I think if I were doing it, I'd do a cliche'd one, with kings for the wisemen - I love those shiny crowns!

@duchessa...here's a link from eBay of a Lego Nativity scene.

Not to take the fun away from customizing but it could be decent for reference for you. There's others too...some hit and miss though on eBay.

Jar Jar would fit perfectly with the cows :)

Not sure if you're a purist or not, but if you're willing to use 3rd party pieces, Brickforge makes an excellent shepherd's crook: http://www.brickforge.com/store/home.php?cat=405
Perhaps some of the little bits and pieces from the Orient Bazaar might be useful: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=3849-1
With only the eyes showing, the yellow microfigure out of there might not be terrible.
  • OrthobotrexOrthobotrex Member Posts: 165
I was imagining maybe the turban of the pop001 with a head placed upside down can make for a baby in swaddling clothes, but it will need a manger.
  • oldtodd33oldtodd33 Member Posts: 2,682
How about using three professors and calling them the Three Unwise Men.

Be sure to add 1 of the cannibals from the recent POTC set, cos they totally would have been there if they could have made it.

I've googled for Lego nativity scene pictures, since almost all of them can give me inspiration. Sometimes what to do, sometimes what to don't do. I like the angel from that scene!

I've just gone through all the microfigs, and personally I think this one is best, and I'll probably use it.image

Yeah I don't know what child services would say about covering your baby's face like that... It's about time TLG came up with a proper lego baby mould. And some old people, while they're at it.

You'd have to call them the Three Educated Men. I suspect however that you said that because you were making a lame attempt at an insult. Now why did you feel the need to do that?

Not to take anything away from an original scenario, but maybe you should have a look at The Brick Testament:

@Mathew the micro figure you showed is that out of rames pyramid? Which is a different set number to the one you posted!
  • MatthewMatthew Administrator Posts: 3,714
No, It's a Ninjago one. You can even see it on the set photo.

Though this was so random, I have to admit I laughed out loud.

In my opinion, I think the best newborn swaddle came from this MOC: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=35999

Either that or someone showing off a decapitated head wrapped in a towel to keep blood from getting everywhere. :-D

Yeah I find the upside-down turban a bit disturbing! (And it won't fit into a crib, unless the crib is huge). How about just wrapping some cloth around a 1x1 round brick?...

Duchessa... may I suggest you check out the Reverend Brendan Powell Smith's LEGO diaramas.... his telling of the Bible using Minifigs and LEGO. He and I have conversed in the past, and his webpage LEGO diorama's do raise a few eyebrows.... especially his Sodom and Gomorrah diorama.... who would have guessed that debauchery could be achieved with Minifigs? LOL....

But if you Google his name, you might get some great ideas for the Nativity... as well as a few Biblical ideas you would never want to recreate... ;-)
  • MatthewMatthew Administrator Posts: 3,714
Just wondering if you made any progress on this? My nativity hasn't come very far - I now have the microfig for Jesus, some camels and a couple of PoP figs to use....
  • DuchessaDuchessa Member Posts: 287
Some progress has been made, but not enough. No nativity scene this year, I'm afraid.

I also have camels and other animals (cows, a pig, a hen), and one of the wise men along with Joseph. Some headgear for the other wise men, the fence around the stable, some log pieces... but that's it.

I've decided to build the whole thing on a 16x32 tan baseplate, using new reddish brown log pieces for most of the stable. One of the problems is how to construct the roof. Another one is the manger itself. Any ideas out there?

I'm trying to do a little scene to put in my winter barn (I 'christmasified the MMV and MMR) I got the animals, now I just need the nativity. Any ideas for an angel?

If you can't get one, just wait until Series 6 is released. There's a genie in there and angels and djinn are just variations on the same mythological character concept.
  • collect_thatcollect_that Member Posts: 1,327
^ LOL! Not the same though is it??
  • MinifigsMeMinifigsMe Member Posts: 2,844
hmmm definitly a bit pink, but certainly cheaper because of one huge lot in france with 1.95 shipping. Might have to make a custom one, I'm starting to get quite nifty with the waterslides and got some little skirts made for my roller derby minifigs. :)
  • MatthewMatthew Administrator Posts: 3,714
Where did you get the waterslide paper Sav?
  • MinifigsMeMinifigsMe Member Posts: 2,844
Ebay, about £1.75 a sheet. It took a lot of faffing to work out how to do it well. I'll write a guide one day with UK supplies.
