With the movie reviews I'd say you've got a decent chance of finding them 50% off or better eventually. =)
Yup. It's not good news to see new sets on discount.

Yeah,  Target apparently lost their mind with their sale (like the City square for 131 and change, and the demo site set for 55 and change. Train station at 41 and change, road plates being 11.99..). So I would say expect some price changes at Amazon today as I would be surprised if the high speed is the only one.

Hope they price match the demolition site so I can request some money back from Amazon.  Bought it last week when it dropped to $67 but another $12 back would be nice.

I didn't realize what a deal I got on City Square until I see how excited you guys are over the $131 price tag.  I found one in Target on clearance months ago for 96.  They gave me an extra 20% off because box was in rough shape.  $80 was the final price.

Actually yoyo.com also had them for about 100 bucks, give or take 5 dollars, about a month ago as well. However, at 131, it is still a good deal over its retail (189.99 USD)

I just got a third one to make it even larger and possibly to have an engine on each end.

I did end up pulling the trigger on a second copy of #60051 High speed train at $85 (or so.) I now need to find instructions for turning the first and last cars into regular passenger cars... (any links are appreciated!)

Glad I didn't see the Cargo train sale, I don't know if I could have resisted that one either!

The deals are just too good this week. My wallet hates me.

Also, not Amazon.com, but jet.com, which is giving 15% off one's next three orders, combined with all the other ways they do discounts (e.g. waive free return shipping, purchase more things in one order), was able to get Jokerland and the Scooby Doo Mansion for $134.80 all-in ($75.46 for Jokerland and $59.34 for Scooby Mansion)! And jet does not charge tax in California like everybody else.

#60050 Train station is 41.59 (36% off) now as well

If there was not a response to the Target sale I would compare this to when Amazon went nuts about 2-3 years ago and putting a bunch of exclusives on insanely good prices.

Wonder if the stores really want to get rid of the trains because they cannot sell them and they are just sitting in stock rooms and warehouses everywhere.. Same with the #60097 (which is still 131.99 (31% off) by the way)

I would be a bit surprised by that, I'm guessing these trains have at least another year of production, if the previous train runs are any indicator.

I think they are making room for the Heavy Haul honestly - I have yet to see a discount on that one (I could be mistaken).  Plus, I believe the Cargo train has been widely available for some time now.  Probably more just a way of moving product...

I did end up pulling the trigger on a second copy of #60051 High speed train at $85 (or so.) I now need to find instructions for turning the first and last cars into regular passenger cars... (any links are appreciated!)
I made one extra car out of the first and last cars; you will need a few extra pieces for this:
    - 1 dark gray plate 2x4 (Hard to see; any color will do)
    - 5 white grill plate 1x2
    - 2 white plate 1x3
    - 2 dark gray arc bricks 1x4 (Hard to see; any color will do)
    - A bunch of white 1x8 bricks... but the extra 1x16, 1x4 and 1x2 will do as substitutes.
And of course a couple of stickers if you want an exact replica.

You will need a lot more pieces if you want to convert the first and last cars into two regular passenger cars. I used the extra car base and motor to create a custom engine (it is just an skeleton engine at the moment).

I hope this helps. Let me know if you needs specifics.

I hear you. Between Amazon deals and yoyo's promos I have been hurting a bit. I notice that lately a lot of LEGO has been on sale more and more.

Also, there appears to be two entries at Amazon for the #60051 High speed train. I got a notice reporting it is no longer available, but see I have one 'saved for later' that is showing as 92.99, but not in stock until May 31st.

I think the sales are the affect of Lego's continuing effort to drive up rrp on everything. One word, Dimensions.

Wouldn't sales have the exact opposite effect though?
All of these sales with large discounts tells me that stores are not going to buy as much from LEGO the next go around (if stores really are losing money with these sales). I have a hard time believing that LEGO is giving retailers sets for 50% of their retail, and that stores would be wanting to reduce their profits to 10-20% of that by reducing the items 30-40% off of retail. Same with Dimensions.. Seeing the Fun packs at 7.50 is probably where they should have started, but are retailers really only paying 5 dollars for these and then charging 3 times the amount? I can see LEGO doing that but not retailers getting that kind of deal from LEGO.
But what do I know about big business, maybe they are getting such good deals from LEGO.
  • Ma1234Ma1234 Member Posts: 693
Dimensions is a totally different situation. I doubt LEGO is pricing them like toys; they are pricing them like video games, which are very frequently put on sale through deep discounts and "Buy 1, get 1..." deals. LEGO knew this when pricing Dimensions, and priced them accordingly.

You'd be very surprised how much big box stores pay for LEGO. They buy it by the truckload and distribute it through their own warehouses. I've seen the numbers from one big box retailer when I used to be a manager there, I can say from experience that our store was paying less than 50% rrp (by about 10%-15%).

That's why retailers are able to run those 50% off and 'buy one get one' deals on Dimensions all the time, I bet retailers are getting those for around 25% of rrp. All you get in those packs are a CMF plus a handful of bricks. The disks are next to nothing to produce. So essentially a few dollars AT MOST to manufacture, add a little bit on top for packaging/shipping, and you are making a ton of money.

It's the week of the movie coming out. It's par for the course to discount toys 15-25% during that time frame. All Angry Bird toys are on sale.

But, yes, I'm sure the prices will become standard like with other sets over time.
