Help from #10196 Grand Carousel owners requested

Seemed like a good idea at the time, but I started gathering parts from my own bins, and bricklinking bits here and there for the #10196 Grand Carousel. I could never justify spending the amount of money that a BNISB set costs, and I'm happy with a few substitutions here and there. I don't care for the sound brick either so that saves £100 on Bricklink.

Anyway.....

Most of the parts are easily found (relatively) but the one thing I can't do without are the 8 fabric panels, part 85195. Currently only 6 are available on Bricklink for £27 each.... again, no thanks. I want to make my own. I'll be experimenting with a few different materials, but what I need is a precise template to cut to.

Are there any #10196 owners out there who could provide me with an accurate template? Could you pop one of the triangular panels on a scanner with a piece of dark paper behind it and email me a file? Or trace around the outside of one with a pencil on a piece of paper and send it via snail mail? I'd be eternally grateful. If I can't make my own panels, I'll be wasting my time gathering all the bricks, and I don't want to start spending big on Bricklink to have an unfinished project at the end of it.

If anyone can help, please give me a PM.

Thanks

    Have a chat with @Princedraven.

He commissioned a company to create a like-for-like of the originals (or thereabouts).

I've had some help already :-), and contacted @Princedraven too. I then come across a thread on this board from 2012 from @Erinlyn80 who was doing exactly the same thing. Don't know why I thought I'd be the only person attempting to Bricklink such a thing - I never even searched. Twit!

@iso3200, were you able to get a sample of the fabric measurement?

If you don't mind, please share the template in this thread for future reference. I'm planing to do the same once I've completed my custom Lego moulding machine.

And if you don't mind, be sure to sell some new color parts once this machine is done ;)

    hi iso,

were you able to produce a look a like replica? Is it hard to find the exact fabric?

I was thinking of taking a cape to a fabric specialist but I have no need for custom lego fabrics at the moment, maybe this would help for you guys though.

I'll be honest - I've stalled a little on this project as a few others have had to be bricklinked in between :)

I believe the material may be called broadcloth, but a google search does give quite a wide definition of this.

I've worked in the graphics arts industries for many years and I know that there are textured papers that are similar - pros; very cheap - cons; not tear resistant. It all depends if you need it to be exact. Hopefully someone with a little more experience will chime in with the correct solution.

I sourced some Tyvek sheets which is a lightweight synthetic paper, like very thin plastic which will work for me in the absence of the real thing.

Resurrecting an old thread that I had bookmarked in case one day I would want to bricklink the Grand Carousel… that day has arrived, those fabric pieces didn’t get any cheaper, it now cost 3x the RRP of #1096 just for a full set of 8 on BrickLink.

Thank to @iso3200 's template, I created mine today after browsing the fabric shop. I put my pieces on the similar background than the picture above and I think the transparency is quite close to the original. The pieces are not perfect.. but the price is

My Grand Carousel is in a state of disarray. It is very flimsy. Also, if every piece doesn’t line up perfectly, the horses don't go up and down fluently and there are sticking points. I had to constantly adjust the whole thing until I got it perfect. Then I moved it and it sort of fell apart. I am not very happy.

I think the key to making the carousel stable and working for a long period of time without having to reassemble and tweek often is to reduce the speed by changing the gearing. I did this with mine and it can run all day (or until the batteries run out).

I also removed the scary sounding music brick and attached a non-Lego music box. Sounds way better.
