Hello fellow AFOLs!

I was a sporadic member of the forum in the past, but either forgot my registration or was dropped due to inactivity.  At any rate, I have been a life-long Lego fan.  My brother and I received our first Lego sets by sending in a coupon from a Velveeta cheese box!  Can't remember what the sets were, but I'm pretty sure they were small vehicles.  Got a number of sets through those childhood years.  The last set I remember getting (or buying) is #452 Mobile Ground Tracking Station.  I'm using a picture of this set as my avatar.

I remember wanting a number of the space sets that were coming out, but I never got any.  I think my parents thought I was getting too old for Lego as I typically got some sporting equipment instead!

I got back into buying Lego about 20 years ago when they came out with the Santa Fe and BNSF/TTX trains.  After Lego my next hobby became Lionel trains of the 1940s/50s.  I thought those Lego trains were pretty cool, so I bought enough sets to build both trains and build a decent track layout.  Had I known Lego trains were going to be as uncommon as they are, I would have bought double of everything!

Once the kids were old enough I started buying Lego for them, all girls so we have quite a few Friends and Elves sets.

I've maintained a small Lego train layout populated with City and Creator 3 in 1 buildings.  The girls have "modified" the buildings to their taste over the years, but they've gotten a lot of pay out of them.

Here are some pictures of the Lego part of the train room.

@KeithB, welcome (back) to the forums! That's such a great shared family experience from how you've described it. Although I am not a train collector, I often envy those with large layouts that include trains. I have too many slippery slopes going on already. I can't afford another!

Glad to have you join the crew!

Thanks for the welcome.  Two of our girls are older now (mid-late teens), but both are still active Lego fans.  We attended Brickworld-Milwaukee in April and we all had a great time.  And now the youngest is really getting interested in Lego, though she's had the advantage of being able to play with all of her sisters' sets!  She has very much gotten turned on to Elves/dragons, so we play with those just about every day.  Lego is such a great toy for kids, it's impact can't be overestimated.

Excellent story.  Love the family fun element.  That's what it should be.

Love the Lego trains.  You have some of the ones I don't and want the most (Maersk, BNSF, Santa Fe, HE) but unfortunately cannot justify spending the money needed to obtain them.

    Welcome!

Thanks for the welcome.  I agree on the (current) cost of those Lego trains.  I really can't believe they've climbed so high.  At the time I bought three TTX sets, but only built two.  Now I don't know that I'd be able to open that last one and build it because of the current value.  My main regrets are not buying more 9V train motors - those have climbed in value also.  And, I wish I had bought two BNSF freight engines and two Maersk sets.  The engines really look good double-heading a train!
