I have a few of these out in a storage closet. I have a few of the larger LEGO boxes standing up in them (among other things).

However you cannot stack them very well. The lids are weak and can cave in with too much weight

The 45 Gallon ones I believe are the ones I have. The only issue is it wastes some space, but they stack well. I have stacked 4 and not had any cave ins. They are made of heavier plastic and have rolling wheels on one side
As for stacking boxes without containers, I think someone in another thread shows there are ikea shelving units that really have good dimensions for LEGO set boxes.
I use them for all my storage shelving actually, (i.e. not just for Lego).
