40634 Icons of Play revealed

Rakuten.jp has revealed a hitherto unknown set, 40634 Icons of Play.

The model comprises half a football pitch, a spectator stand, various other side-builds and 15 skin-toned minifigs, including football players Megan Rapinoe, Yuki Nagasato, Sam Kerr, and Asisat Oshoala.

From an English person’s perspective, my gripe is different to the more predictable ones on the front page - though admittedly patriotic. Why isn’t one of the iconic (and Women’s Euro winning) England squad in this set? In fact there are no European women’s football stars in it at all - I wonder if that might hurt the appeal of this set a little in this region of the world? 

I guess you could use the other minifig bits to approximate your favourite player but the named players are a big selling point from a marketing perspective.

For the record I quite like the design of the rest of the set but I wish they’d focused on giving a complete 5 a side field instead of all the ancillary bits. The comparison to the early noughties football sets is actually favourable - I had some of the sets that predated the spring powered ‘kicking’ players where you just had to use the ‘hand of god’ to move the players around but it was just as fun!

The whole set is a head scratcher. Doesn't really make a good display piece or a good playset. Just a butchered by committee sort of thing I guess.
