Hello from NC

Hi everyone,

I am completely new to LEGO, but recently bought some of the LEGO games for Mac OS X. After watching me play, my little boy decided he now wants LEGOs to play with. So, I started browsing around and found your forum. It's been a nice resource, and helped me make some decisions.

So far, I've bought Hogwarts Castle (4842), Riddles for the Ring (79000), and An Unexpected Gathering (79003). None of them have arrived yet. I am saving them for the upcoming holidays. I don't think I'm done yet.

I never had LEGO toys when I was a kid, but they sure look more intricate than they did back then. Now that I am a mom, I am looking forward to helping my boy put together these sets. I also have my eye on Diagon Alley (10217), for me!

I did want to pop in and say hello, and how much I have enjoyed reading the threads here.

Like you I never had LEGO as a child. I went the Playmobile route with my children. I never had any interest in LEGO until about four years ago. As I have often read in this forum "Careful, it is a slippery slope." I started with buying a used set off of EBay. I now have about 600 sets. Welcome to the world of LEGO and welcome to Brickset.

Its a dangerous stepping out of the shadows. You make great friends who will all turn out to be enablers to your addiction. You're also likely to be harassed by me for money to enjoy raffle prize draw fun ;-) Welcome and enjoy!

Welcome, @LEGOnovice. This is a great hobby, and this forum has a great bunch of people as regular contributors. One word of advice for you: pick and choose the sets you want and like, whatever the theme or size, but don't get sucked into the completist's addiction to get all sets in a theme, or all the polybags ever made, or...it's too late for me; save yourself! ;-))

    600 sets??? Wow! That's impressive.

I can see how easy that would be do become a completist. I do plan to buy some loose minifigures on eBay so I don't have to buy as many sets. I will try not to look at the polybags. ;-)

Welcome to Brickset from another female who enjoys Lego. Before you go wild buying mini-figs on ebay, may I introduce you to http://www.bricklink.com and http://www.brickowl.com. Both sites sell Lego, often much cheaper than ebay. Also check craigslist in your area for used Lego. Should you need help navigating these sites I can help with bricklink, but am not very experienced with brick owl, but there are likely many here on the forums who are.

Thanks, Shellz. I will definitely check out those sites. I appreciate the recommendation. :-)

Trust me, it's not impressive compared to a lot of folks on this forum. I am usually very frugal but LEGO has been an exception. I also am a bit of a completist (not a hoarder) so when my interest in a theme is piqued I tend to purchase all of the sets. I am very fortunate to be at a point in my life (kids grown and financially independent) where I don't have too many financial obligations. Now I just need the time to build them and really enjoy them.

I can imagine that there are some very large collections here. Certainly, you've earned your right to collect as many sets as you want.

I just ordered another one on eBay. My first sets haven't even arrived yet.

Welcome! I'm also from NC, around the Hickory area. This sounds similar to me, except I don't even have the excuse reason of having children. I guess it was about 2 years ago when I got into LEGO (though I did love LEGO as a kid), and what really set my addiction hobby in motion was discovering the modular buildings. First I got the Fire Brigrade, then I "had" to have the Grand Emporium. Last Christmas my wife (at the time fiance) got me the Pet Shop. Now, I'm plotting how to get the Palace Cinema and Town Hall. Then they annouce the Parisian restaurant, and it is, of course, beautiful....And I love trains, so of course I had to have a train circling my town, and plenty of cool vehicles, and...Gandalf, why not?

I'm sure I could stop anytime...I just don't want to. Welcome aboard!

Thanks, tfranklin84. You aren't too far from me. I am in Wilkes.

Your LEGO town sounds very nice. :-)

Neat! The company I work for delivers to Wilkes every week, and I have a few customers there. Have fun!

Maybe you guys can make it to an NCLUG event or meeting in the future? Meetings are mostly in Raleigh, but there is a small group of folks that get together near Charlotte from time to time. Very outdated website www.nclug.us will point you to the mailing list. Hope our paths cross in the future!

@allmybricks Thanks! I'm not aware of any groups in NC. I'll try to get on that mailing list.

Seems like your advice fell on deaf ears, as @LEGOnovice said: I just ordered another one on eBay. My first sets haven't even arrived yet.

Too late carlq, she's one of us now. ;)
