I have 99% of the pieces to the 6274-1: Caribbean Clipper. Any idea how long the string is supposed to be?

Mine is 37 inches, but I think I have lost about an inch from fraying, cause it is a bit tight as it is. I would go for 38 inches. About 96cm depending on your measurement system.

On a related note, I have a box for 6274 if you're interested. I bought a bunch of old boxes off a guy for dirt cheap. Was going to list them on Bricklink but haven't got around to it yet. The 6274 isn't in excellent condition, but is decent. Let me know if you're interested and perhaps we can work out a deal.
