30166 Robin & Redbird Cycle - FREE this Saturday only at TRU

TRU is offering a free 30166 poly with a $20 Batman purchase this Saturday (10/19) in store only. I know TRU really likes to play shennanigans with these promotions, so YMMV on availability, but might be worth a shot...see link below

With a $20+ Batman purchase. You have to spend at least $25 on the Mr. Freeze set.

Is it a new robin or is it the same as other sets, I would hate to over pay for a set to get a free poly bag

Curious, has the Redbird cycle appeared anywhere else for availability besides TRU Canada and U.S.?

Thinking this could be a future S@H giveaway or one of those that appear for $5 around town.

And why for the love of the brick, would you run 3 promotions on the same day? Joker mech, Redbird, and Iron Man drone. Geesh. Plans slow it down a little bit here.

I've been patiently waiting to get this poly in the US since it was previously only released in Canada. Prices on Bricklink had been north of $25, but now we can get it free with a purchase. Good deal.

Buy the Mr. Freeze set for MSRP, get the Robin poly for $5.

It's the same Robin as #6857 Funhouse Escape and #6860 Batcave. According to Bricklink the wheels are pretty rare, as is the red mudguard thing.

I heard they have 3400 of these in the warehouse so keep your eyes open for these to sell in store instead of having to make a purchase. They should be showing up soon. Not that 3400 is a lot, but that's the amount they have right now.

Any comments on the Joker Mech Mini Bot? To me, it's a bit blah. Lacks the creative mischief that is the Joker.

Isn't this on the 19th? Not the 12th? Don't want anyone to head to TRU only to find they're a week early! (It's a 45 min drive for us, so we really work to make it worthwhile if we go.)

Not worth it to me, not going to bother.

  • prevereprevere Member Posts: 2,923
If it were a Mech Bot that looked like the Joker or another villian, that would be sweet.

Something like this would be fine. A line of parts that wraps around the store would be utterly fantastic.
  • murphquakemurphquake Member Posts: 651
The Joker Mech might be worthwhile if it comes with a joker minifig but i doubt it... i thought it was a hot mess til i saw @tormentalous say it looked like it was meant to hold a fig, in which case it could be amusing. I'm close to TRU but have a lug meeting that day, as does @GIR3691 =-p

Hi I'm in the UK if anyone can pick a couple of these polys for me I will be happy to trade as I have a massive collection of polys from most themes- pm me if you can help.
    thanks guys
  • prevereprevere Member Posts: 2,923
I likely doubt it would include a fig. Those TRU events are parts only usually. ^Technically, this isn't a poly, since you have to collect the parts yourself, so there won't be any truly sealed ones available.

Maybe he means the Robin poly, not the Joker build?

And yes, to reiterate, it is the 19th, which as of today is next Saturday.

I found one at TRU tonight!!!! I bought it for $4.99!

So what's anyone's opinion on the rarity of this poly. Sure it seems hard-to-find now but will it end up the on the shelves at TRU months from now? Has TRU had a rare poly like this where the only way to receive one was thru a purchase?
  • prevereprevere Member Posts: 2,923

^50/50 on that. TRU gets great hard-to-find polys from time to time like this (Zombie Car for example). But others seem exclusive and then get dumped for sale at $5. I think the popularity of this one means they sell out of their population with the promo next Sat.

Hedge your bet. Buy 1, and wait for them to release more.

The larger question is why would Lego only allow TRU to have such a cool poly solely as a freebie for one Saturday (and exclude EU)? This smacks of a great month-long freebie at S@H.

Don't forget they are giving an Iron Man the same day, with Marvel set purchases of $20 or more. For us here the Robin poly is hard to find and highly collectible, but for little Timmy, Iron Man is a lot more appealing, so I see stores running out of these first actually.
  • coolpixcoolpix Member Posts: 357
It seems to me that, for TLG and retailers, polys are not real "sets", they are just promotional material you can buy or get for free after a certain purchase threshold, and there is nothing more to that. They don't really think in terms of this poly is better than the other, they just use them to promote stuff. TRU has highly inflated prices on super heroes sets, and they wanted to promote these sales, so TLG gave them a couple polys to do so. Each US retailer gets their share of hard to find polys from time to time, and I don't see a big plan behind this. It is just coincidence that us AFOLs deem some of these highly collectible, that's all.

Ugh, I want this poly bag, but that would mean three things:
    1) having to go to a TRU where most of the people wander like zombies and kids run around like maniacs in the store, making it more of an obstacle course to get what you want, and then have to stand in line.
    2) Having to 'play ball' with TRU knowing their prices are outrageous.
    3) Buying a set at my local TRU and not knowing if it has been stolen out of the box and replaced with dog food, old bricks, or other crap, as Super Heroes are no doubt desirable and thus a target for these creeps.

Ohhh LEGO, why can't you just have these as a promo yourselves?!
  • margotmargot Member Posts: 2,308
These are available at TRU.com right now, unlimited quantities... I suggest you act fast!

Grrr, just checked with my local toysrus and discovered that they did have 50, that is until someone waltzed in and bought 45 of them this morning.
  • vwong19vwong19 Member Posts: 1,191
    ^ or some people...

^^ Thanks Margot. Now I won't have to go to TRU next Saturday.
  • madforLEGOmadforLEGO Member Posts: 10,838
I broke down earlier and decided to hit a TRU by me that I thought may have them for sale and lo and behold they did.
Along with the Iron Man, TMNT, and City Lawnmower polybags.
So I got a few of each.

Although I would be surprised if TRU does not get more in before their in store deals for next week.
I guess anything in possible, but one would think that they have to have stock for these if they are having a promotion.
  • fizicystfizicyst Member Posts: 72
I am willing to bet that most sell out and will not have them for the promotion in just over a week. The same thing happened with several other polys like the coffin car last year and almost every year mine sells out of the bricktober minifigure packs on or before day 1.
  • margotmargot Member Posts: 2,308
    ^My guess as well.

If anyone manages to buy a spare Redbird Cycle poly (or more) and wants to do a trans-Atlantic trade with me for other polybags, please PM me! I have lots to trade.

Just got home from our local TRU...they had a wall of the Lego Robin #30166 sets and Iron Man #30167 sets for $4.99. I expect the eBay prices on those to drop precipitously in the next week or two. I feel kind of bad for those who paid $100+ on eBay for Robin...

glad I sold one for $60 last month, pays for the order I just placed for 10 more!

Stopped in my local. None on the shelves but they had just gotten a box of 50 and were kind enough to pull them out for me. For some reason they rang up under their buy one get one 40% off for City sets so I scored 6 for $25 with tax. They definitely won't last long
  • margotmargot Member Posts: 2,308
^because the sale is on "all Lego constructions sets" .
My store had 50 as well, supposedly sitting on the truck. I hate my TRU.

Yeah...I actually just noticed that they (Robin, Iron Man, etc.) were buy one, get one 40% off. Great deal...I grabbed a few as gifts...there were at least 50 hanging (along with Iron Man). I expect they'll be gone in a couple days.

I looked at purchasing a couple other sets using the BOGO, but only on the condition I could get the free minifigure set TRU was promoting. The lady working the register told me they are only getting 6-8 MF sets each week at our store. In short, that promotion is only to get you into their store...TRU doesn't follow through.

Good for you, but frustrating for the general population. Agree that most of the "free" polybags will have already been purchased before the promo runs. (And that's not a condemnation... I've taken advantage when TRU is foolish enough to put out new polybags during a B1G1Type sale.)
  • juggles7juggles7 Member Posts: 451
Foolish is right. Seems they messed up their own upcoming promo. Same people who exempted Chima (definitely NOT a hot item) from their BOGO sale.

I think it will work out fine if someone wants the set for a reasonable price. These were going for more than $100, but the market is now being flooded with them. At this point, I wouldn't even consider purchasing one for more than $10 shipped.

  • prevereprevere Member Posts: 2,923
^Flooded now. But maybe it disappears again, say like the Bat Jetski (another TRU exclusive I believe).

I would hope they are holding some back for next Saturday. But then again, its TRU, and only the ho-hum Joker Mini Mech can save the day.
  • scotty12scotty12 Member Posts: 852
My local TRU didn't have them out as of today and wouldn't until they get to the truck on Tuesday. I have noticed that this year the 5 minifigure Giveaway seems to be much more plentiful...at least at my small TRU. Last year they only got 10 each week and were gone by Mon-Tues if lucky. Now they've got 15-20 of them still sitting on counter at the checkout as of today.

If any of you ends up with an a extra of this poly and would like to sell then please pm me. The TRU is just too far away to risk making the trip and leaving empty handed.

    Appreciate it.
  • margotmargot Member Posts: 2,308
^Call the store and ask them to hold some for you.
  • CircleKCircleK Member Posts: 1,055
^ Your store must be a lot friendlier than mine. I call in occasionally when new CMF series come out and they put me on hold forever. Sometimes to the point where I just hang up. I asked them to hold a black CMF display case once until I could get there (about 45 minutes drive) and the lady told me they don't do that.

I'm sure it depends on who you get on the phone, but it's gotten to the point where I would just rather avoid them. The only way I go there now is if I can order something online for in store pickup.
  • pillpodpillpod Member Posts: 273
I think they're back in stock online. For now.
  • CircleKCircleK Member Posts: 1,055
They are also on their ebay store (for now) which is a little cheaper on shipping.
  • margotmargot Member Posts: 2,308
@CircleK, I wonder if they would let you pay over the phone and then hold it for pick up?
  • CircleKCircleK Member Posts: 1,055
@Margot. I just bought one from their eBay store. Shipping is a little harsh at $4.86, but it's better than making the 45 minute trip once I consider gas and my time.
  • goshe7goshe7 Member Posts: 515
^ and better than the $7.99 minimum shipping on their website.
  • canon03canon03 Member Posts: 364
My TRU was out-of-stock yesterday so I agree with @CircleK that factoring in gas and the unknown of if they'll have stock next Saturday, it was simply cheaper to order one (TRU eBay).
