Just looked on the LEGO jobs site and they are advertising for staff for a store in Newcastle.

No start date in the advert but there is a location:

New Lego Store Newcastle
Unit 73, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, NE11 9YG, UK

That looks like its at the MetroCentre and not actually in the toon.

Great news for the north east though.

It says "Apply ASAP" in all the job ads, so I guess it must be opening pretty soon - probably trying to open in time to catch the Christmas trade.
I'm glad to see the Northeast getting a store. Midlands next??

Hehe, just been imagining what it would be like if any of the 'stars' of Shoplife got employed at the Metro centre store :-D

YES!!! I'd even settle for one in Southampton

Southampton? Yes, please! Come on Lego - please resuscitate that idea.

The Oracle definitely needs something to make it worth visiting.

I will have to tell my "Geordie" friend. I can't understand half the stuff he says, but it won't matter if he is working at a Lego Brand Store ;)

Interesting thread @Lost. We're finding out who lives in our vicinity. :o)

Howay the bricks! Metrocentre is about 12 miles from me.

At last I will possibly get a Lego brick store kit. Will probably buy a UCS X-wing as qualifying purchase.

I wonder what 3 'characters' they will use for the grand opening set? The Fat Slags and Biffa Bacon would be ace, but not gonna happen.

How about T. Dan Smith? They could bundle him in with a set to make a model of high-rise towers. A set which would use knock-off bricks like Mega-Bloks - which at first glance are both cheap and sturdy, but on closer inspection are badly designed and badly put together, leading to the set being pulled down long before it should have been. ;)

If you don't get the cultural references, go and spend 10 hours watching Our Friends in the North. :)

They'll never do an NUFC fig because that branch has to do for Sunderland and Middlesbrough too. Coal Miner, Ship Builder and Sting or Brian Johnson?

Cast of Geordie Shore with Lego pavement puke accessory?

^Anything with black and white stripes and I'll have to re evaluate everything. Could be Sugar Puffs all over again........

    Don't knock the Honey Monster!

I don't hold much prejudice, just bought a red car after deciding the pearlescent black would be too much work to keep looking clean.

Stan Laurel is a real contender and instantly recogniseable to a lot of people if he can look like he's scratching his head with a Lego arm - He lived in my street in North Shields for the 2nd half of his childhood. We overlook a park with a statue of him in it.

Do they ever use actual people (celebrities) or is it always a selection of typical stereotyped local residents?

There would be plenty of historic local people (miners, shipbuilders etc) but not sure what they would use for current day.
  • cheshirecatcheshirecat Member Posts: 5,331
Sorry to spoil the fun but its normally entirely random with nothing to do with the location, sorry.
  • KingDaveKingDave Member Posts: 973
^ I don't know about that. Looking at the various grand opening sets they have had before there are a smattering of locally themed figures mixed in with some fairly normal ones.

  • cheshirecatcheshirecat Member Posts: 5,331
Early on they seemed to and occasionally they do (leeds) but usually not and the same figures turn up in multiple store packs. If you look hard enough you can imagine a link but then you notice the same figure used in some random US town's pack. There's normally one figure based around the stores opening theme - Manchester was a singer, Watford a train station. But even those are tenuous although not as bas as a new US store near a raceway so they planned a motor racing theme. Turned out the raceway was for horses!

^ Reminds me of Top Gear Magazine's interview with former F1 driver Taki Inoue...

"This is my first airplane, my first trip outside Japan. I don't even know how to get into the plane. When they are serving the food, I ask them how much is it; they say, ‘No, you don't have to pay.'"

When he reached London, his lack of preparation became apparent. "When I arrived at Heathrow, I ask at the information desk, ‘I want to be racing driver, where can I go?' It's true. They say, ‘You should go Newmarket - race course there.' I got a ticket, took the national coach."

So on a dark and miserable October evening, Inoue rattles out of London and into deepest Norfolk. "The driver says, ‘Newmarket,' so I get off. Then I ask a man, ‘Is this race course?' He says, ‘Yes, this is horse-racing course.' Horse racing! Not car. Very disaster."

Been to the Metrocentre today. The bright yellow hoardings are up over one of the units in the Red Quadrant (opposite the Starbucks, halfway up from Debenhams to House of Fraser) proclaimimng that a Lego store is opening in 2013. Couldn't see behind the hoardings and couldn't hear any building work going on, but hopefully they'll be opening in the next few weeks, maybe even in time for brick Friday offers.
  • SirKevbagsSirKevbags Member Posts: 4,027
@monkeyhanger I heard on the grapevine that to be open for Brick Friday IS the plan.
  • alexwilalexwil Member Posts: 376
I may have to start visiting my brother a bit more as he lives up that way!

Mind you driving from Bracknell to Newcastle just for an excuse to visit a lego store does seem a tad extreme!!

The exclusive minifigure pack given away at the Antwerp store's grand opening was the #5000023 set, which is the 1st anniversary pack. Maybe this'll be given at the Newcastle store also, rather than a pack that was made specifically for it.

Glasgow is a bit of a pain to get to when you don't have a car... one in Edinburgh would be super! kthxbai!

Cambridge would be nice - would have thought they'd be a reasonably high amount of people around who'd shop there. MK is just a bit too far for a whim.

The Glasgow one is really quite close to Queen Street railway station. In fact, I reckon it is easier to get to by train than it is by car.

It is a bit like the one in Leeds, hardly any distance at all from the station so ideal if you are carrying heavy bags.
  • SirKevbagsSirKevbags Member Posts: 4,027
Heavy bags can be an arse on busy trains though. That would be all Transpennine ones. Tricky to keep your boxes minty fresh.
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
My heavy bags are normally emptied PAB cups so no problem there.

If I do want to keep a set pristine, I take bubble wrap and a large canvas bag. Whether going by car or train.

I was in on Monday and they knew nothing about an 'official' opening day (or promotions). I do appreciate the new store, but it seems we may not be getting any opening promotions in Newcastle/Gateshead. Could be something to do with how close we are to Festivus maybe?
  • monkeyhangermonkeyhanger Member Posts: 3,161
It's because of Xmas. Usually around a month after opening the official one happens, but that will be smack in the middle of post Christmas sales. . The Metrocentre store will.get a late official opening. Got my #10240 in there on brick Friday (1st day of trading). They were unaware of some prices that were already reduced prior to 10%.to take off.

Bristol would be great but it's too close to Cardiff.
Swindon maybe? There are some good spots to be had in the Outlet, and there's the link to Steam to exploit.
Has the Southampton one opened yet?

That's at least three of us voting for Bristol. Make it happen, Lego!

I will give a vote for Bristol also :)

I would be happy with Exeter or Plymouth if not Bristol.

    Just got an email from the Metrocentre store manager, who said;

Sorry for the late reply. Just to confirm we are having a Grand Opening event, which starts on the 17th of February, where we will be having a ‘Big Build’ in the Metrocentre. Children spend half an hour building, then can come into store for an in-store hunt. From Thursday 20th through till Sunday 23rd we will have exclusive gift with purchases, when you spend over £25 in store. I have listed these below.

Thursday – Exclusive LEGO store Minifigure

Friday – LEGO Store Metrocentre T-shirt.

Saturday – LEGO store building set.

    Sunday – Exclusive BAM pouch.

What is a 'BAM pouch' is the first thing that springs to mind?

Sounds like a punch to the knackers.

Thanks for the info - i'll be there to get myself a Lego store set on the Saturday - always been a bit envious when the previous openings have happened elsewhere in the country.

    BAM = build a minifig???

  • magrimagri Member Posts: 154
They're usually Build a Minifig packs specific to the store launch, like they did for Stratford
  • scottwb2010scottwb2010 Member Posts: 248
Wish they had the store minifig when Glasgow store opened last year. It will be interesting to see what the "pouch" is!
