I agree with everyone who has advocated that Lego should do a 'better' job, with respect to developing more sets, and to include more new characters, which every Lego Tolkien fan wants to have as part of their collection. What I do not get is why so many people are so negative about the sets which thus far have been released.
Of the seven sets from the first wave of LOTR Lego, in my opinion, 5 sets were outstanding:
- The smallest set: 'Gandalf arrives' #9469 is excellent. Everything from the scene it depict is present. The horse drawn cart is well executed, the minifigs are very good. No complaints on my part.
- The second smallest set: 'Shelob attacks' #9470 is a fun brick-build monster set. The two minifigs Frodo and Sam are excellent too.
- #9471 is fantastic expansion set to Helmsdeep. In The Netherlands this set costs €39,99 at Lego-S@H, and most other chains of toyshops, some sell it for even more (it is not a ponzi, yet it reeks of extortion). You get six minifigs, a horse, a siege engine, and a wall segment, at €40 not really cheap (especially in comparison to pricelevels of this set in other countries), still good value for money. Apart from Eomer, all other five minifigs are generic, and great for army building, if that is your thing.
- #9472 Attack on weathertop, incorporates interesting building techniques. Like all other LOTR sets, no BURP's, only small bricks. Fantastic set. Could it have been made bigger. Hell yeah! Couldn't TLC have included a third ring-wraith on horse back, sure, if you ask me. That is if you insist on getting the nine ring-wraiths, you would have only needed to buy the set three times in stead of five times. Still an outstanding set, which had I been in charge of design and development would have included an extra ring-wraith with horse, but alas.
- #9474 'The Battle of Helmsdeep' is a great castle set, true to the way it looks in the movie. Of course rendering it in the scale as seen in the movie is impossible to capture in a set, but for what you get it is really well done. Does it leave anything to desire? Plenty! Which has everything to do with the immense scale of that location in movie/book, and hence all the extra details which, if you want to incorporate, you have to design yourself. Yet another Gimli, is understandable from a true to movie standpoint, yet still redundant. I rather would have had an extra Rohan archer, or better yet two Elven soldiers to accompany Haldir.
Of the two sets, that fall behind from the first wave: #9473 'Mines of Moria' is a minifig bonanza, yet it lacks something with regard to the mine itself.Though is contains all the essential thingies from the location: tomb, well, barricaded door etc. I am hard-pressed offering the solution for this €80 set, without upscaling it in brickcount as well as pricelevel. The minifigs are a blast though! #9476, is way too expensive €49,99 (in NL) for a set that only has four minifigs, and has such a low brickcount, as well as one orc without a hairpiece, that makes him look unfinished.
The choices made for wave two are curious, but not too bad. The Council of Elrond, begs for another future Rivendell set to be developed.
Thus far, of all Hobbit sets released I like all the minifigs a lot, they are magnificent for the most part, Bag End as a set is adorable. And so is the goblin King set imo. The tree from Warg attack, suffers from a lack of foliage, and does not offer ample space for a company of fifteen seeking refuge from bloodthirsty wargs and orcs. The upcoming Hobbit sets seems promising.
I hope the second wave of LOTR won't be the last, nor do I hope that an upcoming third LOTR wave will be the last either. I have no proof to offer for the contrary of all those who claim that LOTR/Hobbit sells poorly, yet I often wonder if there is any fact in support of what those brickset members say, when they slate and dismiss this most magnificent licensed Lego theme ever, and state that it is dead and done for. I really deplore all the pessimism! Cheer up! Up until a year and a half ago you could only dream of such a thing as actual LOTR/Hobbit Lego! Lets hope that like the Superheroes, Harry Potter, and Star Wars, it will continue for a long time to come.
ps.
@Bumblepants
No worries!
Beorn is in both upcoming movie installments for the Hobbit.
Interesting to note that there appears to be no 'entry level' £12 set in this wave, wonder why that might be?
And Azog... now I can see the high-res sets, it IS definitely exactly the same as the SDCC version, hand deformity and all. Great news for us (I'm over the moon! :-D ), maybe not so great news for the guy/gal who paid $1650 for one back in July!
They all look a bit 'samey'. Even though LOTR Weathertop was just rocks and ruins somehow it seemed to be a complete set. These look a little 'back drop ish'. Expect them to be bought for MOC fodder and parting the figs out.
I can't see kids clammering for these over the new Ninjago line or Chima.
Well a new version of Thorin, one of the thirteen dwarves, is included in Laketown Chase. Ergo; do not despair ;-)
I suppose the kids clammering over Ninjago/Chima, probably have not watched the movies. And those kids who prefer these themes, may equally prefer Ninjago/Chima over something like StarWars Lego too. But if, say, ten year old kids won't be allowed to see The hobbit movies, it is probably because a bunch of schmucky senile old nitwittery farts seated on one of these stale motion picture rating system boards, have determined to do so. Because otherwise, hordes of kids might very well covet these Hobbit sets.
Btw has anyone noticed what happened to Thranduil's ears? That's how you ruin an otherwise great headpiece.

Pinch me, i must be dreaming! Too good to be true? Perhaps. But if they do it, and do it well, BOOM. LotR fans would be all over those sets...
just...
needs...
...*whispers* battlepacks.
edit: and BALROG.
Two things troubling about that post, though... Amon Hen has nothing to do with the Palantir... and a $120 Minas Tirith would necessarily be as underwhelming as a $130 Helm's Deep. I was really hoping if Minas Tirith saw the light of day, it would be a D2C set. Still, the prospect of those minifigs has me quite hopeful.
"built" I think probably means that it will be one of the 'mega-mini-creatures' (or what ever the preferred nomenclature in Legology is, to refer to such 'fantasy' animals) like the Red Dragon from #70403 or the Green Dragon from the #7048 Lego-set. Which means it will be brick-build with lots of articulation points; as the tail is comprised of three parts; the two wings need to be mounted using some technic pins, and other parts; the head with movable jaws, and neck are separate parts; the body has four movable limbs (mmmh the fellbeast does not have an extra set of arms, like the Lego castle dragons), but in that case won't be brick build the way some people desire, as I believe I have seen someone post a fellbeast on Cuussoo. This project I think:

Since All nine Nazgul had their own HellHawk, you better go buy that set nine times! Doooh!
I hope the 'Amon Hen ambush' has a new and improved Lurtz, with bow and quiver, and a proper (NEW!) uruk-hai hairpiece, with a ponytail on top of its head, and small pointy ears, with can be worn in combination with a quiver, similar to thorin, and Fili, and Kili's hairpiece. I am sort of wondering why they chose only Merry (if it is merry) to be included in that set.
I hope Faramir will get his own little set (e.g. a Forbidden Pool set), and that the Ranger in the Osgiliath set is generic. That way, if you buy the set twice, or as some people do, a manifold of that you don't end up with an army of Faramirs.
LOL
That was very Cartmanish.....
These all sounds like great sets and I really hope TLG is making them, but I'm not going to set myself up for disappointment, as these sets would be so awesome!
I'm just going to wait for more solid info.
I feel better about collecting LOR/Hobbit minifigures now.
That said, I gotta say that the set "Amon Hen Ambush" seems pretty misplaced. I mean, it's the first set in this theme that hasn't got any minifigs to attract purchasers and collecters - it's a 25$ set. Doesn't sound like the LEGO strategy. That does make the list a bit suspicious, don't you think?
(which means: what I wrote in my previous post with regard to this is just a bunch of nonsense)
@tensor
Yeah, lets hope that it is not just that red dragon recoloured. That would be quite a letdown if TLG did that. It is a nice dragon but it is not even remotely close to what a Fellbeast is supposed to look like.
I would not mind an entirely brick-build Nazgul-bird. That Fellbeast Cuusoo design looks quite nice. Except, I would prefer some alterations. To the head, for a start, to give it eyes, a face which will add to the menacing character and ferocity of the monster, it might need some specially molded pieces for that, and so forth....
As for the Fell Beast, a brick built one wild be a shame since the model they made for the video game was looked good. Not a perfect model but I think it would be pretty good. Definitely better than brick built, IMO
And I'd rather have that than a black castle dragon torso with new head and tail.
Includes the Witch King, Theoden, a Rider of Rohan (Eowyn), a white horse, and a Nazgul
I don't see why you would need the Witch King and another Nazgul in that set.
Or would if this was a real list which I highly doubt. Looks much more like a wish list, it's simply too good to be true unfortunately.
It makes sense wouldn't you agree??? ;-)
Now the question is whether TLG have amended their release schedule to fit in with the movie releases. If so, we could very well see another wave next fall/autumn to tie in with the final movie, if not then these new sets would tie in with what was supposed to be the 2nd and final Hobbit film. Though things seem to point to another final LOTR and Hobbit waves the end of next year.
As minifigures go, I'm satisfied with the Fellowship. It would be nice to get all three bearers of the Elven rings, but if Galadriel isn't produced, I won't be too disappointed. Sauron as he appeared at the Last Alliance in FOTR would be nice, but underwhelming as a minifigure.
I simply can't imagine the sets done without Galadriel.
I am really hoping that set name is correct, just for that minifig.
I still wish for a Rivendell and I always wanted LothLorien, but the later will never happen. I assume there will be a large Smaug set with the 3rd movie release next year.
