Anyone else got the email about the VIP Minifig Set yet?
Basically you get to vote for your favourite from the CMF (Series 1-3) and they are going to make the top5 into a collectors set that is only available to VIP members.
Not chosen who to vote for, may let my son decide.
Who gets your vote???

Shame we don't have a merge function yet :-) (http://www.bricksetforum.com/discussion/1154/voting-for-favourite-s1-3-figure#Item_1)
    Anyone else get this email?

    --
    Dear Matthew,
We know how much our LEGO® fans love their minifigures! That's why we're giving your little VIPs the chance to tell us their number one character from the LEGO Minifigure Series 1 - 3. Simply click on their preferred minifigure below to register your vote. We will then turn the most popular characters into an exclusive LEGO Minifigure set, only available to LEGO VIPs!* Choose wisely, you only get to vote once! Voting closes July 30.

*Voting closes on 30 July 2011 and is restricted to one vote per registered VIP Member. The top 5 minifigures will be announced in the November email newsletter and the set will be exclusively available to VIP Members to purchase in 2012, and at this time terms will be announced. The sets will be available for as long as supplies last. Please be aware that while every best effort will be made to exactly replicate the minifigures from the series range, if the winning minifigures contain parts no longer in production, we will look to find the closest looking pieces as a replacement part, and if no suitable replacement parts are readily available, we will substitute the minifigure(s) in question with runners-up.

There is a list of all the Series 1 - 3 figures underneath, and a vote now button. I'm leaning towards the Forestman or Spartan... There was enough outcry at a Cheerleader and a Skater being included in that calendar, The critics are going to have a field day, I can see their point though, they're hardly going to be 'collectable' if they keep relaunching them...

I believe they will take the top 5 and make a set of those figures available. I do not think they are making a Lego building set for the figs most popular (at least it does not read that way to me).

Ugg! I did not have my VIP Account set to receive e-mail! Now I do, but I am pulling for the baseball player to get voted although I'm guessing it is doubtful.

Oh, I think you're right. I read it quickly on my iPhone the first time. After reading it more thoroughly now (including the fine print) at my computer I think you're right. If it's just taking five figs and bundling them into a pack, then that's pretty lame.
  • prof1515prof1515 Member Posts: 1,550
They're going to take the five figures with the most votes and make them available as a single pack. No question which figure I voted for (the Spartan). Hopefully the five that end up winning aren't figures I have no interest in or I'll pass since I already have cases of the various series and these would only constitute extras.

Voted for the Zombie. Instead of just rereleasing the figures......I hope they add and/or do something special (different) to those figures that are included in the VIP members only set. I would be disappointed if they are exactly the same figures.

Would like to see the following 5 in the set: Zombie, Spartan, Elf, Forestman and Samurai Warrior.

I actually wouldn't have a problem with the elf. I'd like to see figures which haven't appeared in previous collections (ie. forestmen, samurai, ninja, etc.) but which are good in numbers and, especially, have exclusive parts like the Corinthian helm on the Spartan (by exclusive, I mean parts which haven't appeared prior to these figures so the chances of having tons from a lifetime of collecting are null).

My five choices would probably be the Spartan (my favorite Series 2 fig), the baseball player, the robot (my favorite Series 1 fig), the cheerleader and the skier. Suitable runners-up would include the elf and caveman.

The five best CMF's are Elf, Spartan, Forestman, Samurai and Indian ( not the chief ) in that order.
  • MCNwakeboardMCNwakeboard Member Posts: 320
I hope they don't just release a set with the top five choices. My guess is that there won't be much savings over buying them individually and I wouldn't purchase a set with 2-3 other figs that I am not interested in just to get the 1-2 figs that I like the best. I could just purchase the ones I want from Bricklink.

Perhaps this is for people who missed on series 1-2; other than that, there isn't much of a point to re-release figures, especially now that they are showing up in the build-a-mini bin. I saw the cheerleader and clown at the Potomac Mills, VA store this past weekend.

Although the e-mail description seems to indicate a "mini-figure" set, I would much prefer a set built around a figure. If anything, they could wait until the interest in the CMF's dies down and then re-release them by theme (circus figures, ancient history figures, sports figures, etc)

Just voted for the Spaceman. I see this set being released like the Vintage Minifigure Collections for about $15-$20 with the premium being justified by LEGO because the figs are no longer in production. If these are just going to be rereleases than they are not worth buying as I have all of the figs produeced so far.

Well Considering how prolific the Series 2-4 (and soon to be 5) are I went with the series 1, particularly the Zombie, since it appears the Clown (and maybe Cheerleader) are available via Build a Fig. I believe the Magician is as well. If the Zombie is released via Build a fig as well then that pretty much sealed the loss of collectability for the figures... in the long run though it is probably a good thing

  • yys4uyys4u Member Posts: 1,093
Voted for zombie. Easy choice for me. I definitely would like to see a set of 5 different kinds of army builder figs. That being said I only really want zombies, they outta make a set of 5 zombies. I'm guessing the 3 most popular will be zombie, spartan, elf, the other two is a toss up. I'd like to see the cowboy or maybe the wrestler.

I'm very curious as to the price too,its probably going to cost 15-20 like @bmwlego suggested. I think it should be 10 bucks though.
  • legoDadlegoDad Member Posts: 529
@bmwlego...right, just like the Vintage Figure Collections package. Roughly $17.99(?) or so.

I voted for the space pirate dude from Series 3 since I think he looks cool and I inexplicably missed Series 3 in my collecting. I hope the one(s) that win(s) is/are not all one(s) I already own. But with the Spartan in the running, it looks likely.

I inexplicably missed Series 3 in my collecting.
How can you think you've missed out on something that is still available? Either get them in a Lego store, if you have one near you, or get a decent amount of them via the Lego shop at home website. Problem solved.

And yeah, the Blacktron from series 3 is pretty cool. I wasn't too excited about him until I saw the Blacktron logo on his torso after I opened him up.

As for bests of the figures, I agree that it would be nice to have things from series 1 and 2 and 3, I guess, although I can still go to a store and get them no problem, that include implements that aren't used elsewhere. The cheerleader is a good shoe in, since I loved the pom pom idea, and I have a soft spot for cheerleaders. Despite her and the skateboarder from series 1 being included in a stupid calender set currently, I'd probably just rather have her, since the skateboarder from series 1 apppeared to be a lame addition, to me.

I've got dozens of series 2 figures. In fact, so many, that I'd be happy to never see one again. Series 2, outside of one or two figures, was kind of a crap shoot, in my opinion.

Series 3 has some really great figures I'd like to see more of. The baseball player, which I see a few other people liked here, too, is a favorite of mine from that series.

Honestly though, I still encounter series 1, 2, 3, and 4 at local Fred Meyer stores in the Portland area here, and though I'd really like to get my hands on a few more series 1 figures, they always end up being the same stupid ones: crash test dummy and the diver. I'd be a lot more interested in things going in the pack that i don't already have. Particularly, I'd be interested in seeing a Zombie, so I don't have to go out and pay Ebay prices for one, since I don't know anybody in the area willing to trade a zombie for a series 2 figure.

I'd be interested in seeing the following: Zombie, Cheerleader, Caveman, Forestman, Can't have too many Elves, although, again, I can just go to the store and still get them. I guess by the time this is released in 2012 though, series 3 will certainly be sold out.

I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be a monster pack though, with zombie, vampire, witch, werewolf, and frankenstein monster included.

I would imagine that in all likelihood, american-styled figs such as baseball player &/or series 1 will have a healthy chance of getting in, due to the large voting population of the US and the poor distribution they had in that region. Closely followed by any figs that have gone for stupid money on bricklink (spartan, elf).

I don't mind them doing this as much as i did popping figs into that calendar, but i hope it's just a once-and-for all one time only thing which finally puts an end to all this mess of reissuing figs. Because in my opinion all this re-releasing of figs (either because people whined about missing out/they under-produced a winner) is completely in opposition to the whole idea of a collector series that when sold out is meant to be done - it spoils the chase. They might as well just release everything in a plain for all to see box, like everything else, if this is what they're going to be doing everytime a fan-favourite or some scarcity develops.

I've missed out on plenty of regular NON-collectable sets (as have many of us) but I don't see any cloud city boba's, bib fortuna's or greedo's being re-produced anywhere (which makes re-issuing of what is their only collectable series a real kick in the teeth).

Yes, it's tough if you wanted them and missed out, but that's an issue with (and part of the marketing) of any limited run high demand serialised product - it's part of the deal.
I guess creating hype doesn't sit well with Lego, when they realise they've produced too little of the actual product to match desire.

I really believe though that they're doing this purely from greed - they know that they could've sold a lot more, they now want to sell more, and are pretending it's market demand to excuse breaking their side of the 'this is a collectable set' deal... and sell more.

I'd much prefer them to 'play ball' though, and use all that feedback to introduce variations, than spoil the original collection (red cheerleader, baseball player for different team, etc).

One problem i see though is that bit about 'substitute for a runner up fig' - let's hope they don't ignore our votes in favour of another skateboarder filler!

well that's enough of a text block... ;o)

I would be curious to see how Lego intends to offer this minifig set "exclusively to VIP ?members for purchase." A direct email-only buy option for this set and only this set? Give the secret password and the Lego store employee slips you one? In a darkened corner on a certain day at a certain time?

I kind of feel sorry for all the people who bought boxes and boxes with the intention of reselling, because moves like this dilute the value of these series. At this point, Lego should just strike "collectable" from the item description.

Instead of saying, "Vote, and we'll build a set based on the results", Lego should just fess up and say exactly what this poll means: We want to know which minifig you like best. Full stop. Lego will learn not only which are the top five, but how each of the 48 figures ranks in popularity.

I wish Lego would take the results from its poll, and instead of making what seems to be half-baked set somehow integrating the top five, take the time to design and produce a full line that beautifully presents the theme of the favourite(s), for ex., circus, roman era, monsterville, etc. Inspired by the collectable series, not diluting them in one-off sets.

I'm sure I read a suggestion of this in a forum somewhere. Something along the lines of CMF 'allstars'.

I find this worrying, as surely one of the main selling points were the unique new moulds, but as a lot of CMF parts seem to be cropping up in PAB minifig bins I'm guessing they've still got a stash of various pieces somewhere. But would the caveman (for example) really be the same if he had a different beard? or without his club?

The critics are going to have a field day, I can see their point though, they're hardly going to be 'collectable' if they keep relaunching them...
I'd always seen the figures as being 'collectable in the 1st sense of the word
    http://www.thefreedictionary.com/collectible
    col·lect·i·ble also col·lect·a·ble (k-lkt-bl)
    adj.
    1. That can be collected: a collectible loan.
    2. Worthy of being collected: collectible antique coins.

And I think it's only the short supply of series 1 and 2 that's really pushed their prices up. Rather than long term monetary value.

On that note, I'd expect to see the zombie and spartan appear in this set, possibly the cheerleader, the elf (with a standard bow...) and another female (or in all likelyhood - and skier/snowboarder or skater!!!!).

Impossible since Frankenstein's creature is in Series 4 and the figures of that series weren't an option in the voting.

There's hoping... But guess they'll be the same as the CMFs and previous classic minifig packs... :(

Just had a thought about the issue of re-releasing and whether they will become less collectable etc..
I have no idea how they will enforce it, but if they stand by their statement that this set will only be available to VIP members I would assume that means that it will only be possible to get them either [email protected], in a LEGO store or via an email offer.
Now if you think about the huge majority of buyers of CMF's I would assume that they are not bought in any of those channels, more from Argos/Tescos/Target etc...
So, in theory this shouldnt seriously impact on the amount of each in circulation..

    Make sense?
  • bluelion3bluelion3 Member Posts: 156
The "Top 5" set for VIPs only is a bit of a strange idea. If I've been collecting the CMFs and already own most or all of them, why would I buy this set? I would buy them if they were ones I did NOT already own, or if they were ones that make sense as multiples. Who really needs two identical Pop Stars? Two tennis players makes more sense.

Also, hypothetically, if a certain CMF is my favorite, why don't I own it already? How do I know it's my favorite if I don't own it?

Some of the CMFs are not that different from MFs in regular sets. I like the S1 Nurse (my wife is a physician), but I have a bunch of medical MFs from hospitals and ambulances and the like. Ninja, mummy, forestman, and diver, and other MFs have been done with slight differences in regular themes already (Ninjago, Pharaoh's Quest, Castle, Harbor).

So, I would buy a set with the zombie, elf, and spartan, even though I already have them. I must give a mention to Mr. Mariachi too, since no one else has!

I agree with the points made by others about this set making the CMFs less collectible in the sense of "worthy of being collected". If the top 5 set is more than USD $15, then they are being greedy. (Maybe an extra dollar for a fancy box rather than a polybag.) Re-releasing a collectible item is just wrong.
  • bluelion3bluelion3 Member Posts: 156
I just voted (zombie). On a lot of online polls, after you vote, you can see the results so far. I would love to see the data for this poll! Will the crash test dummy really get zero votes? After zombie, spartan, and elf, who else will be in the top 5?
  • allyburnsallyburns Member Posts: 62
I voted for the S1 Robot, which I don't have, I have no series 1 at all, would happily buy a set if anyone has any spares :) Damn the inflation of series 1 minifigs, totally nuts! Please re-release all of series 1 so us late to the game addicts can have closure at last! ;o)

Sad. I also misread the email and thought is was to be a set built around the winning figure. I voted for the Spartan because I wanted a Spartan themed set. I think I'll change my vote to a figure of which I don't already have 60. Series 3 is still available at my local LEGO store so I think I will go with the Zombie.

I wish they'd just make some army-builder/Battle Packs instead. Like an all Spartan pack, all Zombie, all Space Cyborg, etc. and include an exclusive accessory with each one...adding in swords for the Spartan, different torso's and legs for the Zombies, new space/laser rifle for the Cyborg Space Pirate...just thinkin' out loud...

I view this as a shameless attempt by TLG to squeeze more profit from redundant minifigure sales and increase membership in their VIP program of directed marketing.

Will I still buy the "exclusive" set when it's released? Probably :P

I returned from the Lego store in Tigard, Oregon a short time ago. While I was there, I made sure to take a look in the build a figure station to see what was available for build. I was kind of surprised at what I found that I haven't seen listed here yet.

Series 1 figures, besides their implements, were as follows:
    Caveman
    Cheerleader
    Magician
    Forestman
    Super Wrestler
    Indian
    Nurse
Clown (this one has been available for build there for a while, and was posted previously, along with the forestman and magician)

With those figures avaialble for build already, the only reason I see a re-release of them as a decent idea is for their equipment. But if the equipment is no longer in production, which doesn't make sense since they could just pull the mold out again and start using it, they've got plenty of time, then I do question what they are going to use to replace things like pom poms, or the magician's magic wand, or on the offhand chance that they make something like the tennis player again, what they would use for her tennis racket. I could imagine them using one of the old snow shoes for the adventurer's series as a replacement tennis racket. It would be comical and stupid at the same time.

I was at a lego store yesterday and they had all of these S1 figures in the Build a Mini too, plus the Ninja. Thats 9 of the 16 you can get there now. I asked the manager about the accessories for the figures and she said they will probably come out soon, that the accessories for the Build a Mini station always seem to come in slightly after the actual figure parts (something about going through the figure parts faster).

^I found some too at my local shop...Spaceman, Ninja, Cheerleader torso's, Super Wrestler legs, Indian wig w/feathers, Caveman head's, Forestman head and hat, Clown heads, wigs and torso's and even some Agent's villain torso's and head's(I snagged the last ones though. Not sure if they'll get more). No accessories for them though.

They said as well that they'll have all you mentioned above (all parts) available soon(the 10 outta' the first 16). But no set date. I asked about the Robot and they didn't rule it out. Makes it seems we'll see all Series 1 in the BAM station this year (I'm hopin').

The Forestman and Clown parts (head, torso, legs and hat/hair) have been available for some time. I saw them back in early June (June 6 to be exact) and by that time they'd already been there long enough to nearly be picked clean of some elements.

The Ninja and Agent parts have been out there since at least early November when I first saw them in the Build-A-Figure bins. As I mentioned above, the Forestman and Clown were there early in June and most likely May.

@legoDad for future series it is still cheaper to buy the CMF for $2.99 each rather than drop $9.99 at the BAM, so there is some slight advantage.
