Margot that's a great deal. Normally employees can't just mark on the fly or just tell you the price shown is what it is. Was it a manager or something? Maybe it was all in the way you worded it to the guy. :)
  • margotmargot Member Posts: 2,308
He must have been a manager because he had the ability to look up prices and tell me what kind of a deal he could give me, but he still needed another manager to use her key to override the scanned prices. They kept apologizing to me for making me wait too... can you believe that?

Hey MadforLego. You can do your shopping at home with the Walmart app on your smart phone and the UPC codes that you can pull off Brickset. I'm not adept at it but I know member Zon is.

    A couple surprises today
#9473 Mines of Moria for $20
#6154 Duplo Cinderella Castle for $15

Other WM I've checked were still at the 30% clearance level and mostly empty.
  • Thanos75Thanos75 Member Posts: 1,120
I stopped by the two WM's that were on my way home from work....both stores had almost empty LEGO shelves. They had those shelf plans taped to the isle and if the set wasnt on the list it wasnt on the shelf. I looked all over both stores for their hiding place and never found them. I tracked down the manager at each store and both told me the same story. That they packed up all of the sets that werent on the plan. Again I pulled my AFOL membership card and asked if they were still for sale if I bought a bunch and both times I was told no. I asked what they planned on doing with them and both said they didnt know..that they were just told to pack them up for removal from the store.

^ I think typically when stores pack stuff up like that it goes to auction and other places like TJMaxx and such will buy the lots to sell in their stores.

^ FWIW I was at a store last year where they told me they had packed the sets to be sent to a larger WM store to clearance out.

Stopped at one WM to pick up some household things and the Lego aisle had been dropped to 1/4 its previous size (and a small stand-alone four-sided display was in the larger cross-aisle) but the clearance section did actually have a bunch of sets... for no more than 10% off.

Went to my walmart again and they are finally moving stuff around. They totally didn't organize the red tagged toys at all. LEGO sets scattered everywhere, still the same clearance prices. I'm so jelly of ppl getting killer deals on Batwing and Batcave. Mine are not red tagged at all.

@thanos75 for what it's worth my walmart held onto their summer clearance sets until January then put them out at 75% off. I'm sure this is atypical (my walmart is very "special") but there is hope...

    Thanks,
I heard about this in the past, and tried it but it did not seem to work for me.
Ill have to try again at some point.

When does Walmart knock their prices down again?
Just wondering, I think targets do it on Thursdays but when does Walmart normally do it?

    ^It seems totally random.
  • DoubleDDoubleD Member Posts: 488
I don't think Walmart really does it like target. You may get lucky and find one getting mark down more, but I don't think it is that common.

Margot-the-anti-reseller. After mucking around in the reseller-hate thread and feeling all dirty, you have restored my faith in the goodness of AFOLs! Such a nice thing to do.

I checked a bunch of Wal Marts in the Twin Cites of MN and northern Wisconsin this week. Here are a few things I remember seeing (prices were fairly consistent):

    Unexpected Gathering $49
    Goblin King $69
    Attack on Weathertop $39
    Uruk Hai Army $21
    Attack of the Wargs $35
    Mirkwood Spiders $21

As you can see, most prices were 30% off. Also saw the Batcave, Hulk set, a few Galaxy Squad (bigger sets from the first wave), Lex Luthor/Wonder woman set, City Forest police helicopter, police semi truck, patrol car, dirtbike transport, Star Wars Z95, Gungan sub... again all 30% off MSRP. I passed on almost everything because I can buy most of it at Barnes and Noble retail stores with a 20% coupon plus member discount (I'm not a reseller, just buy for personal use). Only picked up a few sets that haven't been well stocked at Barnes and Noble. The only set I saw at greater than 30% was the Gungan sub.

At one store I saw the City hospital set, but it was clearance priced at MSRP so I passed. Hoping to find one of those discounted eventually (have one, want a second for parts).

My two local Walmarts finally moved stuff to a clearance aisle even though they clearance priced stuff a few weeks ago. But at one I found a #7937 train station that they must have found in the back. Unfortunately they had a sticker on it at full price and it didn't scan in the system anymore.

The Walmart closest to me created a whole section in the law and garden section just for the left over LEGO. Maybe its the store that the other smaller WM's are sending their clearance LEGO to. They have about a dozen City Mine,Unexpected gatherings,Attack of the Wargs, Hulk Breakouts, Goblin Kings, and assorted smaller sets each. I did pull the trigger on another Sith Interceptor. That is one of the coolest Star Wars ships I have built yet. I am thinking of getting a couple of the Mines for the parts but i'm going to gamble that they will drop below the $70 that they are at.

One of my local Walmarts is currently busy resetting and placing stuff in the clearance aisle...and they finally put out The Lone Ranger series.....I guess they wanted to get it out on the shelves before the DVD release.

In the video games section they have the Ilrion Heroica set combo pack with Lego Harry Potter Books 5-7 DS game for $19.96. Also Minotaurus/Lego Battles DS for the same price. In the clearance section, saw Creationary for $21.

@Thanos75 Did you notice the clearance price of Goblin Kings? I sure want one.

One of my Walmarts did the same exact thing in the same section with just about all of the same sets.

One Walmart by me had them for $47. All the other ones were at $69 or sold out. The $47 ones didn't last long (this was Friday).

KMart will have lots of $47 Goblin Kings available when their 50% off clearance toys sale hits.

Checked Walmart again last night. Stickers out for the summer sets but empty shelves. Republic Striker Fighter for $25, no sticker. All other discounted sets and red tags vanished.

I checked again this morning at the WM with the 4 isles of clearance LEGO and this time I got excited because there was a manager standing next to it with a clip board. The prices were the same and I asked when and if they will be marked down. She said maybe Monday or Tuesday when the managers meet but she doesnt think they will be marked down. Now I have been looking at these isles for two weeks now and nothing has moved...not one single set from what I saw last week....
  • margotmargot Member Posts: 2,308
@Thanos75 You should have asked her for a discount! Tell her you've noticed nothing is moving and you would like to purchase some clearance Lego!
  • Thanos75Thanos75 Member Posts: 1,120
@margot ....trust me I did. I even told her I would buy everything in one swoop if the price was right. She said she couldnt do anything on the prices. In her defence it was 4:30am. I am working nights this weekend and the WM is a 24hr one and she said she was just the night manager and didnt have the power.

^I've been keeping my eye out for the manager who gave me the super 50-70% off deals. All of the 30% off clearance Lego is just sitting there and I figured I could always use a couple of more sweet deals to store away for the future (maybe future raffles?). So far I haven't seen him. It seems like very few have the power. I did have a manager at another store go to the back and get me 4 Droid Escapes for $7 each at another Walmart, he said that was all they had and nothing else was going on clearance. The amazing thing is he said "just tell the cashier the price is $7". The cashier was able to override $13 and put in $7 without a manger's key, no questions asked. This was the Walmart where all the employees told me there was tons of stuff ready to go on clearance in the back- but I think they are sending it somewhere else, Goodwill maybe?

I have got to stop going to Walmart, I really dislike that store. Clearance Lego has driven me insane...

Went to WM this morning. All the sets were discounted a whole 97 cents off original cost each.

That's the power of Rollback at full throttle. It totally blows away the Target Sale-That's-Not-A-Sale practice. (You know, when Target lists an item in their flyer at the regular Target price).

That's enough sarcasm for now. ;)
