I searched different categories and didnt find anything useful, if there is, my apologies and Mod's please feel free to move, but can the brickset public offer any advice on the current MF available? Worth the price? A must buy? Wait for a good sale? I dable with Star Wars but I must say my interest has been piqued with this set, if I get enough positive feedback I'm just going to get it!

Generally we don't have these kind of threads because this is what reviews are for. I checked and there are 21 reviews and 6 video reviews for this set, with a combined 4.4 stars out of 5.

My husband said "it was OK", he's the SW builder in the family, unless the set has Ahsoka and is therefore claimed by my daughter :).

I loved it.. Probably soon to be retired.
  • meyerc13meyerc13 Member Posts: 227
I liked it. It's probably a bit over-priced, I've seen it for around $100 which is a much better price (obviously). It's a solid model, unlike many of the Star Wars models I've built. It also looks good and has a ton of playability. As I recall, the build was interesting and not terribly boring, it was fun to watch it all come together.

It has been talked about many times in the Discontinued Sets thread, but I understand why you wouldn't want to sort through all that.

Haha yeah I kinda would like to spend a whole day playing and building with LEGO if I absolutely had to dedicate a day to the brick rather than search through that! As for the MF I think it's a great anchor set for Star Wars I just wish it was a bit cheaper but hey can't we say that about every set?
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
It has been on sale several times. I'm sure it will be again, especially before EOL.

Walmart, Amazon TRU BOGO's. Also, Han Solo is a pirate, so that should make your decision easy for you.

Uh oh. Between the notion of the pirate and the fact that I could wait and get it cheaper means I'm more torn than ever! Ahhh

It's a nice set, but unfortunately it's like the cute girl whose sister happens to be a model. No matter how nice it might be on it's own, it's not the 10179. It's just inferior and hard to judge on it's own merit. I have it and I like it though.
  • Brinstar85Brinstar85 Member Posts: 42
Its been around for 2 years so likely won't be on sale for much longer. If you want it, then I would buy it soon. I don't think it should be compared to the UCS version, notwithstanding the obvious massive price differences, 10179 is a display model while 7965 is a playset. If you don't own a falcon then it is a must buy. This is the most iconic ship in the Star Wars universe.

I thought 7965 was a pretty good set, not a giant leap forward from the previous system falcon (4504) but an improvement none the less. The fact that it it included dorsal and ventral quad lasers was a bonus and I particularly liked the interior and the detailed engineering station. The main problem with the model is the underside, which is quite ugly with lots of exposed beams etc. You may wish to address that if you decide to buy the model.
  • piratemania7piratemania7 Member Posts: 2,146
I did decide to get this and will hopefully build it this week. I will probably end up displaying it to some degree along with the figures.
  • GoldchainsGoldchains Member Posts: 795
I think it's a great set. It brought me out of my dark ages when I saw it on sale at a Toys R Us for $100. The build was fun, the minifigs are cool, and it looks great on display too. You made a good choice.

And just like in real life, when you can't get the model, the sister is a really good alternative.

Nothing wrong with a cute girl, but you're right, 10179 it isn't... but it isn't meant to be, and that's ok. :)

UCS Falcon is in the middle of the pic, the current MF is to the right of it, along with the MIDI Scale and Mini Scale MF on the left.

Wow! Now THAT'S awesome. Thanks for sharing. I can't believe the scale from the current one to the UCS!

You bet... Before I sold it I took a series of pictures with it and my kids, everyone agrees it is impressive, but frankly it has become too valuable to keep, so it had to go.

It also isn't useful for young kids, too large and has no interior, the current MF is more practical for kids to play with.

My wife picked up a Russian nesting doll when she was traveling the world. It was of Bill Clinton. Monica Lewinsky was inside. I always thought it should have been the other way around ;)

Great photo. This was posted before by LFT. Gives a great sense of scale.

One of the best things about this version of the MF is that it comes with exactly the minifigures I need for my DS docking bay MOC (okay I'll add the minifigs from droid escape and a few extra stormtroopers but the main cast are all there).

That comment got away from me a bit, that's the problem with thinking!

Hey, deals sometime happen. Remember, I got mine used last summer for under $200. Had to replace some glued parts but all of the rare parts were there.

Why would someone sane pay cash and pick it up if it was a fake?
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
Why? People get scammed all the time. What if what's in the box is NOT the MF?
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
I would bring my scale and weigh it and inspect it carefully.

@legoprods show up with cash get robbed at gun or knife point... so not worth the risk unless they meet you up in front of a police station
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
^ How about a bank? I've bought a UCS Falcon off Craigslist before, did it in the lobby of my bank.

You'd have to be really stupid to rob someone ten feet away from someone with a holdup alarm. :)
  • GoldchainsGoldchains Member Posts: 795
A bank is a good idea. Plus a lot of banks have off-duty armed police officers in them for security as well.

It would still be hard for me to let it go, nothing comes close to it except the UCS IS. Thinking of sticking mine to the wall in the mancave with a TV hanger and painting the wall to look like the back of the ISD bridge (we'll getting my mate to, he's a comic book artist and would do a good job of the wall).

    ^ I hear you...

But at some point, someone offers you enough money that you decide it just isn't that important.

Your price might not be the same as mine ($2K), but there must be a number... $3K? $10K?
  • SirKevbagsSirKevbags Member Posts: 4,027
I would only sell anything like that if life dictated I had to. Once I own a set it no longer has a monetary value. It just exists to be mine. If selling meant I could do something I really wanted that couldn't possibly happen if I didn't then it could all go in a heartbeat.
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
Fair enough... So if it was worth one million dollars, you wouldn't care? :)
  • SirKevbagsSirKevbags Member Posts: 4,027
Its a hypothetical of course so everyone is free to say yeah right but I don't think I would. I'm pretty simple with what I want from life. Experiences have changed the way I think. Ten years back if I was offered current market value of a MF having paid retail I would have snapped their hand off. My mind isn't wired that way now though.
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
:) And ten years ago I'd have said, "yeah right", but today, I'll take you at face value. :)

Of course, you're right, it is just hypothetical, if someone actually offered you that much, you might well change your mind...

Or not, I understand there are people in the world who really don't care.

    ...

Hmm, what if you were offered the cure for cancer for your UCS Falcon? What then? :)
  • SirKevbagsSirKevbags Member Posts: 4,027
Considering I have cancer and its a rare one that is a real bitch to treat then bye bye Falcon :-)

Falls into the category of not being able to achieve something if I held onto it.

Here's my question... in this hypothetical, is a million dollars the market value, or is it some lunatic way overpaying for it? Cause if I can grab another one for even $10,000, you bet I'd sell it to the nut offering me a million. Otherwise, no.

And yes, I know it's just a hunk of plastic... but money is just money. I can't take either with me, so I'd rather have something I can enjoy.

I'm with SirKev and y2josh on this one.

Money doesn't mean all that much when you have enough of it. So I would value my Falcon and the experience from it more than I would a lump sum at market price of replaceable/deflating currency. Striving to not let money own my life, and placing joy much higher on the list of priorities. So on a normal basis, Lego > money

But the cure for cancer? That would be a no-brainer though since its life or death situation, whether for me or others. Being that its what I do on a daily business, I'm obligated to give up a bit of personal joy for a cure(s) to one, some or all cancer. Everything else is small and meaningless when a person is facing oblivion.

I don't tend to put so much value on physical things, meaning that giving up a "prized" Lego set to experience something new is worth it to me. There have been many Lego sets that I have parted with that at one point I never would have considered parting with. I still adore them, but they aren't mine anymore, and that's ok.

I also find that as I get older, I look to simplify my life, and treasuring physical things for a long-term commitment don't generally fit into that plan.

From #7965 to cancer in less than 1 page. Some of us really need that Off Topic section ;)

  • BrickDancerBrickDancer Member Posts: 3,639
    ^Lol.

    Full circle...

I personally think 7965 is a great set in all aspects. Good build, excellent selection of figs, nice size with playable interior. Does it hold a candle against the UCS version? Not even close (but neither are the prices), but I do think it's much better than the 2 versions before it. One of the negatives though is the high amount of stickers. They should have given us printed grill 2x2 tiles.

And if you're thinking about resell and hesitating because of the thinking that a rehash is inevitable down the line? Just look at AT-AT #8129 and its price climb after 1.5 years if EOL. I heard the same story on that one and was convinced hook-line-sinker so didn't buy in until it was too late.

^^ I think everyone is just trying to tell the OP in a subtle way that the sensible thing to do would be to skip 7965 and go straight for 10179.
  • XefanXefan Member Posts: 1,148
I probably wouldn't sell it because whenever I get into a new hobby I seem to end up as a compulsive hoarder and can't just bin/sell things! I have a study full of computers, consoles and games, an attic full of airfix, a conservatory full of orchids and a greenhouse full of cacti :)

The Lego is currently confined to one of the two spare bedrooms, though it's beginning to creep out into other rooms.
