[US] 9398 Technic: 4x4 Crawler: About $137 shipped from Amazon UK

Price is £99.99 + £4.95 shipping, which reduces to a total of £88.28 at final checkout. At the current exchange rate of 1.55, that equals about $137. A great deal for this set if you're looking for it!

Don't forget to factor in any foreign transaction fees if you credit card charges these.

That is a pretty darn good deal considering the set is $200 in the US. See, the USA doesn't get all the cheapest LEGO! :)

Thanks for the deal. I picked one up! I guess I won't be getting the limited edition now.

Thanks for the heads up. Grabbed one for myself.

Awesome. I really wanted to build that but didn't want to drop $200 on it but for that price I ordered 2!

Wish postage was only £4.95 we get £22.08. Although its still about $115 cheaper shipped then AU retail.

We ought to do a thread on Brickset about why Technics is always cheaper to buy from European countries then the US :P

    ^ Ask TRU's

You do still get it cheaper than the UK though. You get it for £88.28, whereas we pay over 10% more.

  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
    ^ I bought 2 so it was only £86.81

Doh! You're right, what was I thinking? :)

Just goes to show why LEGO costs more over there... Taxes...

^ Its actually one of the sets thats very comparable at rrp. Assuming $20 sales tax the UK rrp is $215 V US $220. Just another indication to me that the price charged in any market is the one they can get away with.

That isn't a criticism of LEGO charging what they want. They are not a charity but it goes to show when they want to make prices comparable they can.

Thanks! This is a great price for the US. It will never be available for less than that here...

Yes, excellent, this is a great deal. 30% off & no tax, nice.

Btw, how ridiculous is it that I can get a set shipped to my door from nearly FOUR THOUSAND miles away for far cheaper than I can from the store that's 5 miles away from me?
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
    ^ Completely...
  • nkx1nkx1 Member Posts: 719
^^Totally ridiculous, but that's what we get with the Lego/TRU oligopoly on Technic in the U.S. As with everything, less competition = higher prices.

I can't believe TRU's current price on this set is $230! Are they really selling any at that price? Hmmm, Tower Bridge or 4x4 Crawler...
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
I am in the middle of building 4x4 crawler as we speak, started about a week ago, being doing a bit every day. Have 2 out of the 3 books done, and I have to say it is a really cool build...

    To a point...

Lot of 2x stuff, the front and back is more or less the same, motors on both ends, so it really is 4 wheel drive, the steering is pretty cool, I like how that was done.

My 7 year old is looking forward to driving it around outside. The instructions say indoors only, but we all know THAT isn't going to happen.
  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
^^ My local TRU has it for $199. Amazon UK deal is still better and I'd rather support them than TRU.

Months ago I got a set at TRU before they marked them up and used a 20% off 1 item coupon, so it worked out pretty well. Yeah, they're having a BOGO at TRU now and Technic and Castle are excluded. Funny how that is, used to be SW was always excluded.

-slight tangent- I'm not into SW, so I don't know. Is interesting in LEGO SW's ebbing?
  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
^ I'd say SW is a bit in a lull right now. The system sets are meh. The cartoon is going away, the games have been out a while and no recent movies. It'll pick up again once the movies and shows kick off again.

Do you have any sort of import duties in the US?

This rip off government slaps on huge taxes to packages over a certain value making anything that seems cheap in the US not worth it
  • TheLoneTensorTheLoneTensor Member Posts: 3,937
^I did not, at least on this transaction. The only other charge you should be aware of is if your credit card charges a transaction fee for the exchange.

I got a package a few weeks ago from us, came to about £30, royal mail charged £15 in import charges.

    Royal mail= Royal fail

    Note, I'm in the US.

Capital One is one of the nice bank's in this case, they don't charge a foreign transaction fee.

Bank of America, Chase, etc. all charge 2-3% fee on top of what Amazon.co.uk charges. That applies regardless if you have Amazon.co.uk provide currency conversion services, it isn't the charge being in GBP or USD, it is a foreign transaction.

That being said, even with a fee, this is a heck of a deal.
  • mountebankmountebank Member Posts: 1,237
Does a state's Sales Tax supposedly apply to purchasing items from outside the US?
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
Yes, because it is also a Use tax. But Amazon.co.uk doesn't collect it, so you're supposed to self-report.
  • TheLoneTensorTheLoneTensor Member Posts: 3,937
The fee in my case was $1.42, so yeah, it's minimal with a ~$300 purchase.
  • mountebankmountebank Member Posts: 1,237
Thanks. It's always interesting to learn something new.

It all depends on the card and not the issuing bank. Cards such as United Miles, SW, Ink, Sapphire, Marriott etc from Chase all have zero foreign transaction fees.

^ Interesting, good to know... The Chase cards I've had did, but my CapOne cards don't. BofA does (yuck), I don't remember the rest.

We need a shorthand name for buying the same thing more cheaply in a different market. What about arbrickage?
  • sidersddsidersdd Member Posts: 2,432
Received mine today. Box was in excellent condition. (Added to the build pile)
