What are these 'points' that have suddenly turned up?

y2joshy2josh Member Posts: 1,996
Is this essentially the Brickset version of rep, or what? Mainly I'm just wondering if they have a practical function.

Looks like it might be one of those things that counts how much participation you have on the forum and will block people below a certain level from posting for sale threads etc.

They are a point total to see who is winning our chrome TC-14 vs. non chrome Han Solo bet.

    Currently:
    samiam391- 33 points
    y2josh- 3 points

    Better pick it up Josh.

It's connected to the likes, one point for one like. I'm guessing it's unintentional since it showed up right after the update a couple days ago and is typically associated with reputation/badges. (source)

So... wait. What are everybody else's points for?

They are my points too, but I didn't want you to feel like you were falling to far behind.

I have to have at least a little fun before you give up and admit I was right ;o)

I've wondered about it too. I don't know what they are, but I do know that even if it is connected to the "likes," it is not a one to one ratio. Joseph, look at your own likes and points. You have one "point," but you have 49 "likes." Also, it did not just show up a few days ago. I think it was there when I joined on April 30, if not that far back, at least for the past few weeks.

And while we are asking, what is a "promote?"

I feel like it's a 1:1 ratio to likes past X date. Which would make sense, as I don't get tons of likes to begin with and I have also been making significantly fewer posts since breaking my arm. So I guess @samiam391's theory is nothing but nonsense... which is just what I'd expect from someone who thinks TC-14 is the cat's pajamas. :D

^^^ Firstly, it definitely couldn't have been around for a long time since as you can see here, it wasn't there as of May 22 (edit: that's supposed to link to a cashed version of my profile; can't seem to get the link to work). Unfortunately that's the best concrete evidence I can provide at the moment unless someone other than me can vouch that it appeared on the 7th. Having said that, remember that changes like that are only done by either the admins or in a software update by Vanilla. Since we know the last update was one the 7th, it's reasonable to assume this happened at the same time.

Once you know that, it's easy to see that it is indeed affected on a 1:1 ratio by likes, but only those from after update (as y2josh mentioned above).

I can vouch for Joseph's paragraph long link. ;o)

On a serious note, he is correct. I know that they just showed up recently, definitely not all the way back on April 30th. I saw them just recently and contacted a mod who didn't really know what they were either. Joseph's explanation above, from when Huw just recently updated the site, is the most viable one.

As far as the promote, only mods can use that. It has nothing to do with promotion, but merely means that they want to promote a comment because they agree with it or think it is funny. When they promote a comment, it is automatically included in the "best of" tab. Even if the comment only has 1 like (5 likes enters a comment into "best of"), a promote will make it in "best of".

^Ok- the "promote" explanation makes total sense to me. But...I'm not getting the one to one on the "likes" and the "points." Also, I'm sure the "points" have been around for at least several weeks. I remember boasting to my son about getting "points," not having a clue what they meant!

I went through about 15-25 profiles that I could pull from memory and that was the one that had been cached most recently.
  • LegoMom1LegoMom1 Member Posts: 651
^So I think that only goes to prove my point- no pun intended, really- that the likes and the points are not a 1:1 ratio. And, I am now thinking that the "points", the actual word "points" and a number with it, must show up only after someone has accumulated one or more points(?) Can we get a mod or admin to confirm, deny, or explain all of this, please????

Here. You have eight points right now...

And you got nine as soon as I liked that comment.

Additionally, if I take the 'like' away, you lose a point as well.

I'm still not getting it. The above shows 479 likes and zero points. Then the oldtodd33 post shows pitfall69 with 543 likes and 44 points. No matter how you look at it, there is no 1:1 ratio.
  • JosephJoseph Member Posts: 629

^^^^ How can he have 479 likes on the 4th but have no points while as of now I have 49 likes but one point? Based on that, they must either be based on number of likes past x date or not based on them at all. Since y2josh was kind enough to demonstrate they are indeed related, it would be the first. Between the cached profile (with no points and a last like on the 3rd) and my profile (with a last like on the 7th) we can then deduce that that date must be between those two dates; I would lean toward the 6th/7th since that's when the software was updated.

^ Ha! I liked your comment after checking for your points. You had 1, now you have 2.
  • oldtodd33oldtodd33 Member Posts: 2,683
Which begs the question. If you get a spam or abuse tag, do you loose points? No, I know what you're thinking, don't do it to me to find out. Try pitfall instead.

  • JosephJoseph Member Posts: 629
^ Yep, you lose one point for each of them.
  • y2joshy2josh Member Posts: 1,996
Yeah. That fellow that was cursing people out in the Predictions on Discontinuing Sets thread actually has -6 points, so in addition to being able to lose them, you're also able to dip into the negatives.

Sorry, but I'm at the point, (let's go with pun intended this time), that I really don't care anymore. It is all just too confusing.
  • oldtodd33oldtodd33 Member Posts: 2,683
I was thinking we could go around liking, spamming and abusing each other to try it out. But then I figured my wife would get jealous.

I just want to know how I petition to get a Spam flag removed, since it's hurting my point total. I totally did not deserve my lone spam flag - heck, I got 3 likes on the same comment!
  • LegoMom1LegoMom1 Member Posts: 651
^OK, I'm back. I agree that you should be able to defend a spam or abuse flag, or that the flagger should have to state a reason why he or she flagged you, otherwise it could just be done because the flagger is just a (insert any name you want to call them).

^^ Sorry, it's not possible to remove reactions except your own. I assumed there would be an option in the moderator tools, but there isn't anything. If it's any consolation, plenty of the staff have been flagged as spammers/abusers too ;-)

I have two abuse tags. One for drinking tea, the other for mentioning someone in a thread. Don't worry about them.

It does seem to be +1 point for each new like. The interesting thing is if you remove an old like (even one from moths ago), then it goes down by one too. And the scores can go negative.

Well, I don't know what to make of all of that. I have 2 abuse tags. I had 3 but I talked my way out of it...lol.

The spam was from a troll and he "spammed" a lot of people.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
I'm just surprised. I would have thought the likes numbers and the abuse numbers would be the opposite ;)

Another question. Since you have to look at someones profile to see their points, the likes are on the same page and much larger and likes are points and points are likes and they're on the same page anyway ( since May 7th ) what's the point of having points since the likes are easier to see?

If my points were displayed next to my name like on Fleabay, I could see the point. All points are pun intended by the way.

The points only add and subtract from a certain point that the mods have established. I should have more points than @samiam391. I should have more points than Sam because clearly I'm better ;)
