Software for converting 3D objects into LEGO sculptures

Is there any software out there which can accept a digital representation of an arbitrary 3D object (e.g. a 2ft tall statue) and automatically convert it into a structurally-sound representation made out of LEGO?

Yes, LSculpt which opens a "standard" 3d file and can output LDraw file.

I'm nothing to do with it, just came across it one day.

Is there anything that can do the same with simple bricks, with all the studs facing upwards? (kind of like what you can see in 95% of the construction in the old Statue of Liberty set #3450)

^ (the reason I ask is because I have a metric shedload of bricks and not so many plates)

It may be what has already been referred to above as I may be talking about the same program, but in his new book Brick City: Lego for Grown Ups, Warren Elsmore mentions writing his own program for doing exactly what you are after I seem to recall.

I have not got the book on me but will have a look at what page it is mentioned on and post it here later on today. Contacting Warren should be fairly easy (he may even be here on the forum) so perhaps he could send you the file.

There's an option in LSculpt to do all studs up.
