Brickworld Collaborative Displays

Anyone here have any advice for participating in the collaborative displays at Brickworld Chicago? I've check the guildelines (http://www.brickworld.us/view/info/collaborative/) but am wondering for any other advice. This will be my first year and my oldest son will be joining me. I figured we should build something so we didn't regret it after we get there.

Any basic advice for a first timer? I'd love to hear some of your experiences from first time and beyond.
